This is my favorite spin off from the 1632 series started by Eric Flint. I love the characters and the thoughtful way they get into and out of trouble as the book moves along. Eagerly anticipating the sequel!

Now that a few years have passed I have read this novel cover to cover multiple times, once ever 12-18 months. The story is a lot of fun with people working hard to make their corner of the world a better place using every practical means that is at their disposal, and inventing a few of their own as time goes on. The second book "1637 The Volga Rules" is nearly as much of a treasure and the third novel in the series "1638 The Sovereign States" is due to be published on September 1, 2023.

In anticipation I purchased the first two novels in Audible format and this one was a great listening experience. The narrator has a mellow voice that is easy to listen too and expresses the different characters well.

I thought I owned everything Robert Conroy had published but just recently discovered this novel released years after his death in December 2014.

The novel is a quick read and quite enjoyable though it has a bit more adult intimacy than I expected based on his earlier novels. Here we find a US Civil War with moderate direct UK involvement in the form of a declaration of war and those consequences. Ironically the involvement of the UK serves to goad even more loyal Americans into joining the war effort and things tip inexorably in favor of Union forces once the full weight of this new enthusiasm can be harnessed for the Northern Cause.

The audible track was well done and kept a good pace.

I first read Dracula decades ago and still have my original paperback packed away somewhere. This week I purchased both the ebook and audible versions so I could enjoy it once again without having to wear my reading glasses. Like Carmilla by Joseph Le Fanu, Bram Stoker's Dracula sets for a prototype of an undead human who seduces and drains their victims life by drinking their very blood.
Everyone should read these stories as their authors intended. I now have the novel in paper, Kindle and Audible formats in the unabridged version. The Audible performance is well enough done that you can lose yourself in the story immersing yourself in it to good effect.

This was a fast paced and exciting novel about a civilization in our future that develops a different kind of time travel. The implications and adventures this leads to are a lot of fun and made for an exciting read. I liked it so much I immediately purchased the sequel!
The Audible book was well done and an enjoyable listening experience, highly recommended as a companion for the Kindle text.

I have been a long time fan of the 1632verse with its multiple threads of stories woven into a wonderful, comprehensive tapestry. In this novel we get the biographically rounded account of one of the most interesting 1632 series life and interactions with others from youth through the beginning of his career heading the company which plays a crucial role in the 1632verse. While so many of the stories concentrate on modern people struggling to adapt to 1631-1637 this novel is about a professional Alchemist who is recruited, and then does things the modern folks never expected by applying the scientific method to the challenges they provide him. As a result he surprises them repeatedly by developing things the thought impossible. This novel is now in my top 5 books from this series of over 60 volumes. Highly recommended!
The Audible version was a recent addition to my library and very well done making the characters come even more alive in my imagination.

Classic sci-fi I have read and reread this novel more times than I can count and most recently I added the Audiobook which was just a delight to listen through. Aging Jack Holloway is a gem miner on a frontier world going about his lonely life when one day a furry short but friendly alien wanders into his homestead. This chance encounter changes his life and the destiny of the Fuzzy people forever.

I tried really hard to like this novel. I read book one and loved it and leaped right into book two.
Unfortunately half way through the most unlikeable character from the first book resumes a place of prominence and by the 60 percent mark is rampaging behind the scenes having now lived thousands of years and not learned anything about how his past arrogance caused disaster. Nothing worse than a character who becomes a sad joke, supposedly very intelligent but incapable of learning a single new thing no matter how much time passes. It is bad enough when a new character repeats mistakes as a replacement foil to the main character but to me it was so much worse reusing a now ancient but unchanging bad guy. I will not be continuing this series as this novel completely ruined the setting for me.
The narrator did a fine job of delivering the material as written, my dislike of the novel is not a reflection on their efforts to deliver the product as written.

This fairly hard military sci fi was exciting and interesting. I don't think this tech would really work but it is internally consistent and places hard limits on what the characters can do. This is what you need in good sci fi, character driven stories with people acting like people really act. I am moving on to the second novel to see what happens next.
The narrator did an excellent job and I switched back and forth between the Kindle and Audible versions with no interuptions depending on the environment where I was enjoying the book.

Book one introduces us to the mysterious human civilization outside the solar system and their war. This novels deepens that mystery and does very little to answer the puzzles revealed in the first novel. I personally found this to be quite frustrating but the narrator did an excellent job making the novel come alive in my imagination and it was still enjoyable in its fashion. I personally prefer books where the main plot point is solved within one or two novels and new and different issues need to be resolved in later novels.

Dr. Calhoun to the rescue!

Classic Space Opera, the Med Ship series of stories is an old favorite and it was great to find them all collected under one cover. Because they were written as separate novels at the time of publication the first few pages of each review the basics of the Med Ship Universe so first time readers who had not necessarily read any of the other installments understand who the lead characters are and what there motivations are. When reading them in rapid sequence the repetition of the basic facts can be mildly offputting, but that is an artifact of how they were originally published, not a failing of the stories or the author.

Calhoun is the perpetual young Doctor, a few years past residency and expert in diplomatic skills needed to pass on knew medical insights to the planets he visits without offending the governments or medical establishments too much. At least that is the theory, but these are adventure stories so in each case something has gone terribly wrong, often due to greed or corruption, and he must find a way to fix it to promote the health of the people he encounters. Each of the included novels has a unique mystery to be solved complete with its own solutions and maneuverings.

The Audible version is a fun listen and brings the adventures to life in a different way than my minds eye.
