Her mastery of such diverse settings is unparalleled by any other author I know. This is a beautiful friends-to-lovers/forbidden romance filled with vivid detail. I loved both the hero and heroine, who are very sympathetic. Maggie is great guide to the ton for the reader since it's new to her too. Some elements strained credulity, but I suppose that's true for most historical romances, especially those that cross class lines. Most of all, I was happy to see these two outsiders find their happily ever after. However, I am always disappointed when an audiobook omits the Author's Note.

I'm discovering her for the first time. As an American who loves accents, part of the pleasure here is listening to all the lovely Australian voices. But most of all, I am grateful for their honesty and vulnerability as Chantelle wisely and gently guides them forward. Give this a listen. You won't be sorry.

I have only two complaints:

1. I wish this were longer and included more poems
2. I don't think they ended on the strongest poem

Neither is Armitage's fault! He's sublime!

Cara Bastone + Audible Originals = Perfection! She is SO GOOD at banter and telling adorable stories solely through dialogue, and Audible gives her fantastic voice actors. How can anyone not swoon over Santino Fontana's performance?

Funny and sweet. Also, I want Jinxsy for a pet. A short but satisfying romance.

The first time I read a Susie Murphy book, I am hurrying to find out what happens next! Re-experiencing it in audio, I can appreciate her craft better. Murphy is adept at putting her characters in peril—multiple characters in multiple locations! I enjoyed getting payoffs for setups in previous books and seeing returning characters. Bridget and Cormac finally find Bronagh! Emily's chapters on the ship to England are particularly outstanding, full of heartfelt drama and character growth.

From Pompeii to Rome

There was some modern phrasing I didn't care for, but overall this was a convincing recreation of ancient Rome. It was well-written with wonderful, memorable characters, especially our heroine. Having just read a couple of novels that take place IN Pompeii during the eruption of Vesuvius, I found it interesting to read about the disaster from the point-of-view of people impacted but not present: the loss of loved ones and the aftermath. While her emotion was great, unfortunately the narrator used a high-pitched voice for the heroine that sometimes annoyed me.

I'm sad that Book Two in the series isn't yet in audio.

Sci-fi isn't my usual genre, but I mostly enjoyed The Martian. Moreover, half the population of my Audiobook Addicts Facebook group has been raving about this book for months.

What I didn't like about The Martian was:
1. Too much detail on the math and the science for me
2. Too frequent profanity

Happily, #2 is absent here, probably because our hero is a schoolteacher. I definitely liked him better than The Martian hero. The opening section of Project Hail Mary especially veered into #1 a lot, but I'm sure the people who enjoy sci-fi didn't mind. I can't say if Weir's science holds water, but it all sounded plausible to me.

I didn't care for the dual-timeline nature of Project, the constant flashbacks, but they allow for the doozy of a twist. Once Rocky showed up, I was invested. I grew very fond of him and this buddy tragicomedy in space. Yes, I teared up over an alien spider being. In the end, this story is surprisingly touching and sweet.

The audiobook narrator, Ray Porter, is phenomenal, and the producers were able to use sound in awesome ways to convey Rocky's language.

I enjoyed visiting sacred Native American sites with Graham, reuniting with Makawee, and spending more time with the Crow. Although I have to admit it was strange viewing the Sioux as the enemy--I've long studied the West from the point-of-view of the Cheyenne, for whom the Sioux (Lakota) were allies and the Crow were the enemy.

I'd choose him and Bridget over Jamie and Claire any day!

I enjoyed this novel even more the second time. Perhaps it was Gary Furlong's lovely, lilting narration. Perhaps it was the fact that I'd read Book Five and could content myself that Bronagh would be found...just not yet. Mostly I enjoyed spending time with these characters again.

One of the pleasures of Murphy's work is how Bridget and Cormac's relationship develops over time. There are many tender moments between them to cherish here, from sexy bits to moving bits to humorous bits. I especially liked it when Murphy combined humorous and sexy!

I absolutely loved Emily's Cinderella evening. It was daring, exciting, suspenseful, and romantic. I don't think I've ever seen a maid character crossing the class line in that way, so even though it was an echo of Cinderella, the scene still felt fresh.

I thoroughly admire Murphy's ability to keep us on our toes and wanting more book after book. Bravo!
