Historia
It is 4034 AD. Humanity has made it to the stars but Fassin Taak, a Slow Seer at the Court of the Nasqueron Dwellers, will be fortunate if he makes it to the end of the year. The Nasqueron Dwellers inhabit a gas giant on the outskirts of the galaxy, in a system awaiting its wormhole connection to the rest of civilisation. In the meantime, they are dismissed as decadents living in a state of highly developed barbarism, hoarding data without order, hunting their own young and fighting pointless formal wars.

This is one of my favourite of Banks'. Luceferous is such an incredibly evil villian, the perfect foil to the Dweller's laxidasical aloofness

Historia
The award-winning Claire North returns with her most powerful and imaginative novel yet - a spellbinding tale set in a future utopian society that is thrilling, moving and thought-provoking in equal measure. Once the world was on fire - but that was long ago. The Burning Age gave way to an era of peace, humanity finding harmony with nature and each other, as new cities rose from the ruins of the old. Ven used to be a holy man, a guardian of ancient archives. Sorting secrets from sacrilege, he studied the past so that we might never repeat it.

Beautifully written, and very well performed. I loved the concept of the premise and the simple way the survivors lived.

Revisado: 12-26-21
A great story to finish off The Expanse. Jefferson May's once again fails to disappoint, with rich voices familiar as old friends. Some parts of the editing seemed a little rushed, but I assume these small nitpicks will be sorted soon enough.

Product of its time, but an uninteresting ride
Revisado: 02-21-21
Can't hold the context against the author, but the main character isn't likeable, nor has any redeeming qualities save being Lawful. The story itself is not terribly interesting either.

Thirteen hundred gates have opened to solar systems around the galaxy. But as humanity builds its interstellar empire in the alien ruins, the mysteries and threats grow deeper. In the dead systems where gates lead to stranger things than alien planets, Elvi Okoye begins a desperate search to discover the nature of a genocide that happened before the first human beings existed and to find weapons to fight a war against forces at the edge of the imaginable. But the price of that knowledge may be higher than she can pay.

Historia
We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

An interesting take on first contact. The writing isn't amazing, but it is definitely better than a lot of other 'science fantasy' on Audible at the moment. Will probably pick up the next in the series, which is more than I can say for many other titles I've listened to recently.

Historia
The stories in The Dying Earth introduce dozens of seekers of wisom and beauty, lovely lost women, wizards of every shade of eccentricity with their runic amulets and spells. We meet the melancholy deodands, who feed on human flesh and the twk-men, who ride dragonflies and trade information for salt. There are monsters and demons. Each being is morally ambiguous: The evil are charming, the good are dangerous. All are at home.

Interesting Old-School Fantasy
Revisado: 11-13-18
I didn't really know much about the history of this book, other than it was an integral precursor to the inception of early D&D systems w.r.t magic & spells. As is expected for a work of the 1950's, there are a number of stereotypes and tropes, though whether these were tropes or 'just the way things were' back then is unclear.
The writing is highfalutin, but not necessarily off-putting, and the narrator adds a lot of texture to the work. An interesting perspective to someone who has much more exposure to 'modern' fantasy. Recommended.
