Historia
Every generation, a journalist has looked deep into the heart of the nuclear military establishment: the technologies, the safeguards, the plans, and the risks. These investigations are vital to how we understand the world we really live in—where one nuclear missile will beget one in return, and where the choreography of the world’s end requires massive decisions made on seconds’ notice with information that is only as good as the intelligence we have. Pulitzer Prize finalist Annie Jacobsen’s Nuclear War: A Scenario explores this ticking-clock scenario.

Chilling and thought-provoking
Revisado: 05-04-24
Well worth your time. Two small criticisms: (1) there are several mispronunciations throughout the book — “DYE-SAH” for DISA (pronounced DISS-UH), for example, and (2) at the end of the book the author tries to write from the perspective of 24,000 years from now — which is a goofy mistake that somewhat derails her previously excellent narrative.

Good story teller; gets a bit preachy
Revisado: 12-07-22
This book is an excellent listen when the author is relaying historical events. The author, though, does become a bit preachy, especially in the final chapters.

Historia
In April 2021, an urgent call was placed from a Special Forces operator serving overseas. The message was clear: Get Nezam out of Afghanistan now. Nezam was part of the Afghan National Army’s first group of American-trained commandos; he passed through Fort Bragg’s legendary Q course and served alongside the US Special Forces for over a decade. But Afghanistan’s government and army were on the edge of collapse, and Nezam was receiving threatening texts from the Taliban.

The failure of American senior leadership during the fall of Afghanistan is effectively outlined, as is the story of men and women who stepped up to do what’s right.

Some good sections, but author has a hard time staying on task
Revisado: 10-13-22
When this book talks about focus, it has good ideas and suggestions. There are several sections throughout the book, though, where the author wanders away from his declared subject and addresses his personal views regarding the environment, financial inequality, and other social issues. The book could have been improved if had stuck to the announced topic at hand.

Skim the first half of the book. Way too many insignificant details are included; some of them redundant.

“2034” is a must-read book.
In the fine tradition of Sir John Hackett’s “The Third World War,” 2034 will hopefully serve as a wake-up call to the world, and most directly to political and military leaders in the People’s Republic of China, Russia, Iran, and the United States.

Great ideas often come from a simple spark: A soccer player on the New Zealand national team notices all the unused wool his country produces and figures out a way to turn them into shoes (Allbirds). A former Buddhist monk decides the very best way to spread his mindfulness teachings is by launching an app (Headspace). A sandwich cart vendor finds a way to reuse leftover pita bread and turns it into a multimillion-dollar business (Stacy’s Pita Chips).

Too much fluff
Revisado: 05-08-19
The third “book” (The Magic Ladder) is the best — concise and direct.
The Law of Success (the first book) is W-A-Y too full of pseudo-science, truly goofy personal philosophies (for example, about vibrating waves of energy), and other off-topic ramblings that take up too much time and detract from the core concepts.
The basic message is excellent, but the unabridged book is filled to the brim with off-topic verbiage.

Lukianoff and Haidt offer a comprehensive set of reforms that will strengthen young people and institutions, allowing us all to reap the benefits of diversity, including viewpoint diversity. This is a book for anyone who is confused by what’s happening on college campuses today, or has children, or is concerned about the growing inability of Americans to live and work and cooperate across party lines.
