Historia
Few men can say they have known Africa as Capstick has known itleading safaris through lion country; tracking man-eating leopards along tangled jungle paths; running for cover as fear-maddened elephants stampede in all directions. And of the few who have known this dangerous way of life, fewer still can recount their adventures with the flair of this former professional hunter-turned-writer.

Wonderful safari stories

Great material and entertaining.
There is seemingly endless drama in the material. Unfortunately the narrator seemed to feel it was his job to emphasize much of it through his delivery. It takes very little time for this to become irritating to the point of distraction.

Heavy handed YA literature.

I listened to this because one of my kids was assigned it for school and I wanted to be able to talk about the book.
This story is fairly blunt and lacks nuance for the most part. I’d call it a super-light homage to Orwell.
I’m not certain why they always offer dystopian books to tweens. I remember being assigned “The Beach” and others as a kid in the early 80’s.
There are a massive number of great books out there to introduce young folks to. This story doesn’t remotely rank among them.
The producers of this audio version felt the need to insert background music at times. In my opinion, this is always a teeth-grindingly bad decision.

Historia
In 1839, two years after graduating from Harvard, Henry David Thoreau and his older brother, John, took a boat-and-hiking trip from Concord, Massachusetts, to the White Mountains of New Hampshire. After John's sudden death in 1842, Thoreau began to prepare a memorial account of their excursion during his stay at Walden Pond. Modern listeners have come to see Thoreau's story of the river journey as an appropriate predecessor to Walden, depicting the early years of his spiritual and artistic growth.

If you can hold your judgement of the author’s tone there are some great bits in here.

From Pulitzer Prize-winner John McPhee, author of The Founding Fish, comes the fascinating story of an often overlooked, yet vitally important part of America. This first-hand account of the transportation sector features evocative portraits of the men and women who deliver our consumer and industrial goods.

It’s been a long while since I last read McPhee. This was an absolute pleasure. McPhee is less personal and more precise than E. B. White, but they share an awe of the everyday that is not to be missed.

Historia
In Dumb Luck and the Kindness of Strangers, Gierach looks back to the long-ago day when he bought his first resident fishing license in Colorado, where the fishing season never ends, and just knew he was in the right place. And he succinctly sums up part of the appeal of his sport when he writes that it is "[A]n acquired taste that reintroduces the chaos of uncertainty back into our well-regulated lives".

Flatter than earlier books
Revisado: 01-15-23
Gierach’s earlier books do a wonderful job of conveying the miraculous that hides just under the surface of sporting life. This book is much more of a chronicle of the day in day out. He continues to craft lovely prose, but this collection lacks the glimpses into the sublime.

Hollis Henry worked for the global marketing magnate Hubertus Bigend once before. She never meant to repeat the experience. Milgrim is even more thoroughly owned by Bigend. He's worth owning for his useful gift of seeming to disappear in almost any setting. baked into bone, entirely experimental, to show for it. Garreth has a passion for extreme sports. Garreth isn't owned by Bigend at all.

Lots of high tech skullduggery all surrounding what, cloths? I’ll admit I listened to this on the laurels of reading Neuromancer in the 90s. My mistake.

A bit like comic book dialogue.
Revisado: 04-27-22
A somewhat appealing concept but with clunky execution. The prose in this story falls short of inspired. There are some creative angles but it mostly emerges in a halting fashion; largely owing to the rudimentary nature of the language and its delivery.
