Hi my name is Dexter, I started on campaign 2 and so far I’m loving it! I’ve been wanting to get into dnd for awhile and I love listening to this for ideas and just for the sake of the wonderful storyline and great role playing/acting! Thank you for sharing your campaigns with the internet and I will definitely be sharing this podcast with my friends

Badly Written, Poorly Read

This is the first book I've read from Heinlein and I can't imagine reading anything else he wrote. Even allowing for the time in which it was written, Heinlein consistently and repeatedly sexualizes women and even young girls through his male characters. It is quite intentional as his first-person narrator presents multiple justifications for this as though he anticipates the average readers discomfort with his creepy leer at the women in his story. I found this to be the most noxious element and the easiest to address without spoilers that, I hope, will save others 14 hours and 12 minutes of their time.

As for the rest of his writing, the author clearly fancies himself a political philosopher and pot-stirrer. His characters are like sock-puppet veneers he's devised to either promote to the reader or provoke into thinking about present-day societal norms. But these dumb puppets never actually challenge any controversial views which are presented as common sense. It's like a very arrogant and very ignorant libertarian misunderstood the Socratic method and then based an entire science fiction book around his shower-thoughts.

As for the actual science fiction, I thought some of the ideas were interesting, especially considering when he wrote it. I don't know that they were original, but if I had to throw Heinlein a bone, that would be it: there were a few bits of actual science fiction floating in an otherwise misogynistic stew of creepy objectification and throw-away sociopolitical rambling.

I found the performance grating and inconsistent. The narrator attempts Russian and French accents that are poor at best, and at worst, blend into one another and become something unrecognizable. Perhaps the narrator delivers good performances on other works, but combined with the bad material, it is nearly headache inducing.

I loved the story, it was perfect. I’m a big fan of science fiction books and this is by far the best one I’ve listened to yet. Loved that the author chose spiders instead of a mammal and thought that the way their ecosystem worked was so interesting and well thought through.
