Historia
Ancient Egyptian civilization is so grand our minds sometimes have difficulty adjusting to it. It lasted 3,000 years, longer than any other on the planet. Its Great Pyramid of Cheops was the tallest building in the world until well into the 19th century and remains the only Ancient Wonder still standing. And it was the most technologically advanced of the ancient civilizations, with the medical knowledge that made Egyptian physicians the most famous in the world.

Interesting. A bit outdated
Revisado: 09-14-20
Overall I enjoyed this listen. It does transport you to a fascinating period of our world history, and does it well.
Several issues I had:
1. Some of the information is obsolete. For example, the author expresses his wishes for Tut-Ankh-Amon to go through a CAT scan so we can learn more about him. This has been done and you can find a BBC documentary with some fascinating findings.
2. I wish the author would use the original Egyptian pronunciation for the protagonists names. At least the way we assume it to sound. I feel the Anglicized version is telling only part of the story, at least for me, being a semite language speaker.s
3. Dates are rarely mentioned, so it's hard to keep track of where you are relative to historical events elsewhere.
4. The author is repeatedly using "Palestine" to refer to the land of Canaan (K'na'an). Palestine didn't exist until Rome decided to use the name of an extinct foe of the people of Judah - The Philistines, to erase all traces of the Jewish people who lived in Canaan and rebelled against Rome... twice. This is inaccurate, and to me, as a member of the people who embody the rise of the Jewish people out of the ashes, it sounds like an agenda.

Historia
The Middle East is a critically important area of our world. And, with its current prominence in international affairs, media images of the Middle East reach us on a daily basis. Much media coverage, however, is incomplete at best, failing to take account of either the complexities or the historical background of this pivotal region. For most of us, the real story of the Middle East remains untold. What made this crucial geopolitical area what it is today?

If you think Game of Thrones is far-fetched...
Revisado: 03-28-19
If you think Game of Thrones is far-fetched, think again...
Save for the dragons and the white-walkers, real history has it all: extremism and tolerance, all in unexpected places, courage and backstabbing, family feuds, terror and lust.
All in my backyard (I live in Israel).
Just one thing to note is that it is mostly about the Islam. It starts with Mohamed and ends in modern times.
There are for sure some significant turning points in the middle east before Mohamed and it would be nice to get a sequel that tells the story of those.
This is one I am planning to listen to again.

Very soothing, bite-sized meditation practice
Revisado: 10-19-18
Includes 20 tracks, built as a progression of meditation practices, which you are supposed to use day after day.
I didn't. The habit of meditation is not part of my routine yet, but I once in a while I do listen to a track, and every time I do, I enjoy it and find it very relaxing, and the experience makes me want to come back to this again.
Caesar's voice is so relaxing and positive that it makes a big difference.

Historia
The things we want most - peace of mind, fulfilling relationships, to do well at work - are surprisingly straightforward to realize. But too often our best efforts to attain them are built on destructive habits that sabotage us. In Four Seconds, Peter Bregman shows us how to replace negative patterns with energy boosting and productive behaviors. To thrive in our fast-paced world all it takes is to pause for as few as four seconds.

Childish both in content and narration

Just another one of those fad self-improvement books.
There's nothing revelatory in there, and the narration is slow and patronizing.

Historia
Among Americans, diabetes is more prevalent today than ever. Obesity is at epidemic proportions; nearly 10% of children are thought to have nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. And sugar is at the root of these, and other, critical, society-wide, health-related problems. With his signature command of both science and straight talk, Gary Taubes delves into Americans' history with sugar: its uses as a preservative, as an additive in cigarettes, the contemporary overuse of high-fructose corn syrup.

Fails to deliver concrete, practical advice
Revisado: 01-18-17
The book includes a tediously detailed history on the research of sugar and its impact on health, but fails to provide any practical guidance on what we should do about this. For example, should we limit consumption of fruits? (or any naturally occurring sugars), carbs in general? (bread, pasta, potatoes...). Are artificial sweeteners a good alternative? How much sugar is it safe to consume? (and no, "zero sugar" is not a realistic option). Is honey okay? Are sweet potatoes okay?

Historia
One of the most admired nonfiction writers of our time retells the story of one truly fabulous year in the life of his native country - a fascinating and gripping narrative featuring such outsized American heroes as Charles Lindbergh, Babe Ruth, and yes Herbert Hoover, and a gallery of criminals (Al Capone), eccentrics (Shipwreck Kelly), and close-mouthed politicians (Calvin Coolidge). It was the year Americans attempted and accomplished outsized things and came of age in a big, brawling manner. What a country. What a summer. And what a writer to bring it all so vividly alive.

Bill Bryson has done it again!
Revisado: 04-30-14
If you could sum up One Summer in three words, what would they be?
Enlightening, engaging, great read
What other book might you compare One Summer to and why?
Any other Bryson book
Any additional comments?
I am a big fan of Bill Bryson, he is the best storyteller in modern times, and can make any topic interesting - From Shakespeare to Australia, and has done it again with this book, highlighting a forgotten era which had some tremendous turning points which affect the way we live and think today. More please!

The end of diet = Eat only vegetables and legumes.
Revisado: 04-30-14
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
While the information inside this book is credible, it is sobering and disappointing because it's clear to me that this "end-of-dieting" diet is something I will never be able to live by.
The skinny of it is that you need to restrict your diet to vegetables, legumes, fruits and if you really insist, and tiny amount of fish/meat. Some nuts and seeds are also fine and even recommended.
No oil, no sugar, no salt etc. etc.
The problem is that for most people it is a proposition that is way out of their reach, and will undoubtedly cause people to throw their hands in the air in despair... and change absolutely nothing.
It would be much better if there was some guidance on how to make some small adjustments that will lead you to get closer to that ideal nutrition, but there's nothing of that sort in there.
Was The End of Dieting worth the listening time?
Not really.
