surprisingly enjoyable

not my usual style, but I found the storytelling gripping. I had a few complaints with some Hebrew pronunciations but it definitely wasn't the most egregious reading of a Jewish audiobook I've ever listened to.

Historia
Rachel has an unusual problem: she can't die. Her recent troubles - widowhood, a failing business, an unemployed middle-aged son - are only the latest. She's already put up with scores of marriages and hundreds of children, over 2,000 years - ever since she made a spiritual bargain to save the life of her first son back in Roman-occupied Jerusalem. There's only one other person in the world who understands: a man she once loved passionately, who has been stalking her through the centuries, convinced they belong together forever.

best narration I've ever heard
Revisado: 11-17-22
Beautiful, haunting story, as always from Dara Horn. But most impressive on this audiobook is the reader! I've listened to a lot of Jewish audiobooks where the narrator cannot pronounce Hebrew/Yiddish words and it makes me cringe. Elisabeth Rodgers nails pronunciation and her voices for the various characters (especially the children) are really convincing.

I downloaded the audiobook as a freebie and didn't listen to it for years. Finally gave it a go and thoroughly enjoyed it - the young protagonist, the coming-of-age friendships, the magic and whimsy. Delightful.

finally a Jewish book with a good reader!
Revisado: 10-09-20
I often encounter readers mispronouncing Yiddish or Hebrew words when I listen to Jewish books on audible. I was so impressed by the good voice acting in this one! Story line was a bit cliche but an enjoyable listen overall.

Historia
In the grand storytelling style that is his signature, James Michener sweeps us back through time to the very beginnings of the Jewish faith, thousands of years ago. Through the predecessors of four modern men and women, we experience the entire colorful history of the Jews, including the life of the early Hebrews and their persecutions, the impact of Christianity, the Crusades, and the Spanish Inquisition, all the way to the founding of present-day Israel and the Middle East conflict.

Historia
Israel David Goodkind is a minor bureaucrat in the Nixon White House, killing empty office time by writing the story of four generations of his large, sprawling Russian Jewish immigrant family. As he recounts his brief stint in show business, his torrid affair with a showgirl, and his encounters with a hassled and distracted President Nixon, Goodkind also witnesses historical events firsthand - the Watergate scandal, the Yom Kippur War - and eventually finds his way back to his Jewish faith.

Set in the London of the 1660s and of the early 21st century, The Weight of Ink is the interwoven tale of two women of remarkable intellect: Ester Velasquez, an emigrant from Amsterdam who is permitted to scribe for a blind rabbi, just before the plague hits the city, and Helen Watt, an ailing historian with a love of Jewish history. Pandering
Revisado: 06-10-17
It was a satisfying enough conclusion to the Wicked book series, but I thought the constant quoting of other Oz sources to be a bit lazy writing. The musical Wicked even follows a different plot, let alone that Wizard of Oz and The Wiz are different properties. Why did Maguire have to include so many references to these other Oz stories??
