Third eye, purple light meditation, Hindu philosophical references mixed in with angles, archangels, ‘powerful vibrations,’ chakras… On and on and ON. A confused and disjointed “five minute” path to…. what? (Not sleep!)

Historia
The daughter of a Burmese mother and a white American father, Alex Wagner grew up thinking of herself as a "futureface" - an avatar of a mixed-race future when all races would merge into a brown singularity. But when one family mystery leads to another, Wagner's postracial ideals fray as she becomes obsessed with the specifics of her own family's racial and ethnic history. Drawn into the wild world of ancestry, she embarks upon a quest around the world - and into her own DNA - to answer the ultimate questions of who she really is and where she belongs.

Timeliness! Read in early August 2024.
Revisado: 08-06-24
Loved this book for its way of putting ostensibly difficult, send and divisive issues into clear perspective with humor and grace. I read it while the news cycle was covering and totally obsessed with our racial ‘differences’ (NABJ interview and follow-up), for which it was a welcome breath of fresh air. Alex writes just as she presents herself on TV. That is to say, smart, focused and with a beautiful smile.

Man what a GREAT story….BUT……

Need a whole lot of suspension of disbelief.
Revisado: 05-01-24
Way too many plot twists that were unrealistic. Lots of creative work requires suspension of disbelief, but with this novel, many ‘scenes’ and activities were so off that they kept breaking the fictional spell, so to speak, prompting eye rolls, or even a need for a reading break. This is the opposite of a page turner. At about half way through I had to consider putting it down. Probably should have, but it was my only option on a long car ride and I stuck with it to the ‘end.’ (If we could call it that.). I’ve liked other novels by this author and I tend to like the lead actress, but the format and totally unrealistic storyline made this one very difficult to enjoy.

Historia
By the time he was 19, Frank Schaeffer’s parents had achieved global fame as best-selling evangelical authors and speakers, and Frank had joined his father on the evangelical circuit. He would go on to speak before thousands and publish his own best seller. But while coming of age as a rising evangelical star, Schaeffer felt increasingly alienated, and as a result, he experienced a crisis of faith that would ultimately lead to his journey out of the fold - even if it meant losing everything.

Eye opening
Revisado: 12-28-23
I was raised to be open minded and accepting of others as an Episcopalian. We saw the lessons of the Bible more as guidance and (l) could never quite get a grip on the concept or practices ‘Fundamentalism.’ This really helped me to understand it as a cult concept… a culture with underlying principles that are to be followed without reason or questioning. One can without a hint of hypocrisy fly in a jet plane or talk on a cellphone yet not believe in science!

In the aftermath of the 2020 presidential election, Donald Trump and many around him, including certain other elected Republican officials, intentionally breached their oath to the Constitution: they ignored the rulings of dozens of courts, plotted to overturn a lawful election, and provoked a violent attack on our Capitol.

I couldn’t stop listening. This should be required reading in all high schools, colleges and universities. One can only hope copies will be sent to and read by the sitting trump sycophants in our government.

Plot holes, completely unrealistic events, and an unsatisfying ending that left several important loose ends. (Was actually a little bothered and even ticked off.)

Not for anyone living or who has lived within the sphere of influence of a narcissist.
Revisado: 03-10-23
As the plot unfolded l became increasingly irritated by the lack of obvious questions that were somehow never asked or even entertained. Near the end, little disconnected hints were dropped for expediency in quickly‘wrapping up an otherwise scattered plot. However anyone who has lived through a childhood with a narcissistic parent would know how unrealistic the storyline is. Narcissists are always larger than life, well known to and often feared by all in their sphere. Apparently not in this world.

Way too predictable.
Revisado: 03-08-23
This is a story with few twists or turns. When the writing gets tough (or the plot FINALLY begins to thicken a bit)… just bump another main character. It’s OK, we can always bring in a completely unknown ‘someone’ at the end to ‘author-splain’ a secret plot that had few plot clues or even mild foreshadowing… other than it always appeared that the good guys would certainly win. Ugh.

Historia
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

Revisado: 12-17-22
As a child of the 50s and 60s this richly imagined story brought back many memories. I had a strong minded, widowed mom who in hindsight was well ahead of her time in thought and spirit. When I really enjoy a book I read it twice and this was good to the last page both times!
