A magic wand approach to solving climate change

This book is hopeful but disappointingly naive. It is insufficiently substantive to serve as a primer on climate change solutions. Its imagined future depends on a magic-wand ability to overcome many obstacles without any acknowledgement of them or realistic discussion about the practical challenges. It overtly promotes a sloppy version of democratic socialism to dismantle and replace free market capitalism as if (1) doing so was a simple choice the entire US could easily embrace without substantial obstacles or consequences; and (2) doing so was the only way to achieve the public response required to address climate change. This renders the book both ineffective and easy for climate change skeptics to dismiss.

One of the most well done, entertaining readings of an audio book. Great job bringing the story to life. I wish Stephanie Willis could narrate every book.

Also it’s a very well written, satisfying murder mystery that captures the period so well.

I love Stacey Abrams and wanted to love this book but there were critical flaws that left me disappointed. The story is fairly sophisticated and compelling and features a lot of interesting and original ideas. However, the execution is beset by basic flaws that should have been spotted and fixed in the editing process. For example, long passages of expositional dialogue could have been better rendered by following the adage of “show, don’t tell.” Next, the plot was intended to unfold like the unlocking of a series of intriguing puzzles. Unfortunately, this effect fails because the plot instead unfolds as a series of superficial breadcrumbs the characters plod along reactively rather than via the dramatic tension from the consequences of choices that emanate from character. Further, the author’s romance-novel writing style does not always serve the thriller genre. The storyline itself was unnecessarily complicated and often hard to follow. Instead of building mystery and interest, the way information was parsed resulted in confusion. I had to reread passages to figure out who wanted what and why. I also felt that, although the intention was to present a strong female protagonist, the main character is actually dramatically weak and reactive. Rather than an everyperson-protagonist who must—through grit and survival determination—dig down deep into her character to face her fears and flaws, Avery spends most of the book as a woe-is-me romance novel damsel-in-distress (albeit smart and accomplished) controlled by outside forces. I wanted this character to take charge and stick up for herself to demonstrate whatever it was that got her to her station in life (beyond her memory and chess skills). Oh well, please keep trying Stacey.

One of the best books about the Beatles ever written... unfortunately this version is abridged and many of the most interesting insights have been left out... Molina makes a good narrator, too bad this is not the full book.

This book provides an important counter-factual narrative against the misinformation of how Snowden was portrayed as a villain, or worse, a narcissist and traitor. In fact, his bravery and selflessness should be recognized for the act of heroism that it was, in the service of our civil liberties and democracy. Also, a surprisingly strong and well-written story.

Overall groundbreaking set of new ideas and insights that define what a 21st century business is while providing a tangible path to becoming one... My only quibble is that the 2011 business examples are woefully outdated in the context of 2019 but the ideas do hold up

this was a Tawdry love triangle romance with lots of sex, not a thriller as advertised... we were victims of classic bate-and-switch... the actor reading it did a good job anyway

The story was compelling, unique and kept us interested to the end. It is the quintessential detective story (IQ is that quirky detective you want to get to know equally as much as you want to see him solve the mystery) but IQ and his world are new and refreshing. The actor who read the story was talented, he does so many voices and does them well. We are looking forward to the next book in the series!

Where does Killers of the Flower Moon rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

WARNING: SO COMPELLING, YOU CANNOT STOP ONCE YOU START.

Have you listened to any of the narrators’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

The three narrators, each with different styles, underscore the different narrative threads in the book that ultimately come together. Most importantly, their voices didn't get in the way of the listening.

Any additional comments?

This unique, dissection of forgotten history gets the treatment it so richly deserved. Very well told and well-structured story. The murder mystery keeps you engaged, the humanity of it will make your heart sob with sorrow. Touching upon the nascent oil industry, the FBI, the closing of the American frontier, human greed, and murder, the interweaving threads come together in a satisfying conclusion and a tragic reminder how we so unjustly mistreated native Americans.
