Possible spoilers ahead.

I’ve read/listened to other titles by this author and have enjoyed the plot. This review is on this book only, not on the author.

That said, the plot in this book was so unsatisfying. The plot line is basically a series of very boring miscommunications that have the stakes artificially amped up. Additionally, the third act conflict doesn’t begin until the last hour of the book. The conflict occurs over the course of a single evening and is resolved by the end of the night. The result is basically a FMC who is a pushover, and a MMC who has almost no character growth.

I would not recommend listening to this book.

Finally, the cover art is additionally frustrating since the character description is so focused on how the FMC wears glasses almost all the time. So why the heck is the cover model not wearing glasses?

The characters in the story were a little one dimensional. It wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t incredible, and that’s OK. Not every story has to be world changing. I appreciated that it was fairly short, which was just the right amount of time for me to enjoy during my weekend. I would read other books by this author and I may return to listen to this book in the future, but probably not in the near future.

I enjoyed the characters and concept of the story. The MMC was the most enjoyable part, specifically because he had depth and complexity to him.

The book hyper focuses on the FMCs body image issues. At 16.5 hours long, that device gets really, old really fast. It makes the FMC less enjoyable and more annoying. As someone who’s struggled with their weight, I can understand why the author might want to write a story with a plus size FMC. This was a swing and a miss for me. The hyper-fixation on weight/size and the FMCs poor self worth for 16 hours of the story was really aggravating.

The culmination of the story’s plot was also not super satisfying. It seemed like the author may have been trying to make it a victory scene, but I honestly kind of wanted more time in the story dedicated to the downfall of the FMC ex boyfriend.

All that said, the steamy scenes were decent. I’m not sure that’s enough to make me re-listen to this book.

I really enjoyed the complexity and depth of the characters. The author makes the story a compelling listen. I can’t wait until book 2. This will definitely be a heavy rotation series for me.

Performance note: The narrator’s style includes longer pauses between sentences than I personally enjoy, but speeding up the dialogue to 1.5x speed was enough to overcome that.

This is the first time in a while that I resonated with a FMC. The way the author wrote Zelda was so real and relatable. Ash was wonderful, and the narrators were great. This is the kind of feel good story I’ll reach for over and over.

Another fun mythical m/m romance from Russell

I’ve enjoyed every story from E.J Russell and this is no exception. I rate this a 4 of 5 because it is best enjoyed if you’ve read or listened to the 9 other stories which introduce the tertiary characters. Some readers my find it challenging or confusing if they read this as a ‘stand alone’ but then are introduced to something like 20 other characters.

This story is a bit of a love letter to E.J. Russell fans- you get a tiny update on characters you fell in love with in past stories. For new readers, I recommend checking out the authors other stories, starting with ‘Cutie and the Beast’.

No spoilers.

The two man in characters are enjoyably written with defined motivations that make it understandable and relatable that the characters behave as they do. There’s a bit of world building since the story takes place in an American city (Baltimore) that also appears to be future state and with magic. I enjoyed how the author was able to build the world around the characters without excessive exposition.

Greg Boudreaux is fabulous as always!

No spoilers.

The author does a great job with several complex topics. These added depth to the characters and defined their actions and motivations in a way rarely done. Greg Boudreaux is a master at accents-he brings this story to life.

Definitely worth a listen. Can’t wait for book 3!

Sexual Harassment parading as "romance"

Spoilers: One of the main characters (Logan) sexually harasses the second character (Tate) with extreme aggression. The character writes it as if Logan is totally in the right to do so. I had to stop listening after about 2 1/2 hours because I was so mad. There was nothing indicating that the character arc would involve Logan learning a lesson. Basically, it made it seem like Logan was right to harass Tate until his sexual orientation was changed.

As a Bi-person, I found this book offensive. Tate is a straight up sexual predator. No person should feel bullied into "trying" out a different part of their sexual orientation.

I will not be reading or listening to any more books by this author.

Nothing complicated

Synopsis: Just the right length for some steamy sex scenes and an unrealistic HEA.

Younger woman falls best friend's dad during road trip. The story isn't super complicated, and the character development is ok. There's nothing ground breaking or unpredictable about this book. The story focuses more on the sparks and attraction but doesn't address any of the complications that come with falling for someone in a short period of time.

The biggest issue with this book is that the story is basically about falling in lust with someone, but is treated like the characters are falling in love. The author gives it a little HEA at the end. Given the length of the story, I wouldn't expect the author to get too in depth about complexities.

I found listening to this book on 1.2 speed was more enjoyable since the narration seemed a little slow in terms of cadence. That's totally a personal preference.

I spent $1.99 on the book since I was able to get the kindle version through KU. I feel like spending a credit on this book wouldn't have been worth it. Not sure if I'll listen to other books by Sara Cate since this story seemed a little simplistic and the sex scenes were a little "meh".

Themes: age gap, romance, forbidden romance, road trip.
