Being a dude, it's pretty safe to say that this book was not written with me in mind. I basically selected it because I've been seeing the author's name on the shelves of various grocery stores since I was a kid and was curious to see what the fuss was about. Honest opinion: This was basically a childrens' book. No true conflict occurs. No adversity or interesting plot developments of any kind. The story opens with its protagonists in horrible conditions. Then everything quickly gets better, and better, and better for them until they die peacefully. This brings us to the middle of the book, which proceeds to follow the protagonists' son on his journey to overcome the difficulties of being insanely rich. Don't worry, everything turns out fine. Pretty dumb, overall. Can't say I'm impressed, but it passed the time. The characters were very alive in my mind. I can see why Ms. Steele is successful, but this was pretty mediocre.

The narrative style feels somewhat amateur, but the plot is fast-paced, and it keeps you guessing for a while. The ending is, ultimately, predictable but satisfying. Overall, I was thoroughly entertained. Recommended for splatter-punk fans that are in the mood for something with a touch of humor and a playful approach to the unflinching slaughter of many innocent victims.

Aside: The narrator is exceptionally good. Fantastic voice. Good inflection and cadence. Always clear and articulate. Her performance took the overall experience from 3 star to 4 star territory.

I'm probably not being fair. I'm sure it said 'abridged' somewhere and I just missed it. Still, I regret the purchase. Not much here.

It's pretty hard to talk about this volume without spoiling it. Indeed, as I peruse the other reviews, this is exactly what they do. Not explicitly, perhaps, but if you have already read the first two volumes, any discussion of the plot is likely to give you (if you are like me) more information than you would really want. Just go for it. At this point, you are pretty well committed anyway. Personally, I loved it. I was a bit nonplussed initially, but, over the last few days, it has all sort of settled/coalesced in my mind. It's really very good. Very ambitious. The author went deeper than I ever would have expected. Far more thought provoking and soul-searching than the average sci-fi.

It's been years since I watched the movie, but I definitely remember it being far more vanilla and all-around boring than the book turned out to be. The dialog is certainly much edgier, the characters more three dimensional, the story more engaging... darker. Point being, if you've watched the movie and are feeling like you might not be interested in the book, either because you already know the story or even didn't like it, I would definitely recommend taking the chance. This was just plain better, imo. In Cold Blood was a much more faithful film treatment, but I'd recommend the full book on that one as well. Between the two, I've definitely become a full-blown Capote fan. Great writer. His prose always manages to be uncommonly vivid and poetic without ever sacrificing plot or pace.

Non-stop chuckles, interspersed with frequent bouts of unrestrained laughter. Stephen is a satirist of rare and exceptional beauty. Squidbillies and the collective works of Trey Parker are His only true equals. Anybody that enjoys one of the three definitely owes to themselves to check out the other two.

Seriously, painfully bad. Did I finish it? Yes (it wasn't easy). If I hated it so much, why did I finish it? Glutton for punishment, I suppose. Also, I have certain principles that forbid me from commenting on a story that I didn't even finish, and I felt the need to get a few things off of my chest where The Prophecy is concerned. For starters, it's all premise and zero plot. It starts episode 1 is a bunch of catastrophes occurring, and a handful of people trying desperately to get the world to believe that they aren't crazy. Episodes 2-8 are, also, a bunch of catastrophes occurring while a handful of people try to convince the world that they aren't crazy. All the way through the very end of the final episode, this state of affairs remains completely unchanged. What else? Well, it's a story that is completely based on the Bible, written by someone who I would bet every dime I've got has never even read the d*mn thing. The dialog is amateurish at best. I don't want to pick nits all day, so I won't. Suffice to say that there simply is no story here. There is just an idea, a jumping off point: What if the Bible was describing things to come, rather than things that already happened thousands of years ago. Apparently nothing. That's what if. Absolutely nothing happens. It just rolls this idea around for 8 episodes, and goes nowhere. Kind of like this review. The experience was beyond annoying. I can't believe they got Lawrence Fishburn to even consider it, much less actually do it. It's the worst thing he has ever put his name on. Were there any redeeming factors? Yes. It was well produced and well acted, hence 2 stars instead of one. But, honestly, this only makes matters worse. It had every concievable advantage, and it still sucked out loud. The opposite of entertaining. I seriously couldn't wait for it to be over. Utterly painfully redundant. Kind of like this review ;)

The story definitely took quite a few unexpected turns. The worst I can say is that it involves a few horror cliches, most notably the central position of a tarot card reader as a driving force in the plot. I'm kind of over this particular device. On the other hand, many of the other characters are extremely out of the ordinary, and the plot & ending are far from being cliche. Downright strange and certainly unpredictable.

Pretty straightforward adventure. Short and sweet. Very entertaining. Doyle's prose is about as elegant as they come. Loved the ending, especially the conclusion of the romantic narrative established in the first chapter. Everything basically fell into effortlessly perfect placement.

Anyone considering this should obviously have already read The Three-body Problem. Assuming such to be the case, fans of the first will find this next chapter quite different in terms of narrative style. Where Three-Body is fairly linear, this installment does a great deal of jumping around and delves into some pretty abstract ideas. Characters and subplots are introduced abruptly, and major plot developments jump out of nowhere, then are quickly left in the dust of what rapidly evolves into an incredibly intricate story. Basically, I'd say that a half-bright teenager could handle the first volume with no difficulty, whereas The Dark Forrest definitely demands a bit more endurance and careful analysis from its audience. I would not be surprised if it actually pi**es a few people off.

The intense narrative is also, unfortunately, made even more difficult by a barely competent narrator. I can't imagine what kind of bone-head made the decision to switch from the guy that did the first one, but the new narrator is not half as good. He is good with accents. I'll give him that. But his rhythm and inflection are flat-out bad. It took a long time for me to get used to him. He is constantly reading through full-blown scene changes as though they are just the next sentence. He had me hitting the rewind button a lot more than I typically need to.

All that notwithstanding, this was amazing. Liu just has such a magnificent brain. I stand in awe. The story is beyond epic and infinitely creative. Well worth the effort. Can't wait to see what happens next.
