Historia
The time is World War II. The place is a brutal prison camp deep in Japanese-occupied territory. Here, within the seething mass of humanity, one man, an American corporal, seeks dominance over both captives and captors alike. His weapons are human courage, unblinking understanding of human weaknesses, and total willingness to exploit every opportunity to enlarge his power and corrupt or destroy anyone who stands in his path.

I loved Clavell’s exploration of moralistic values in a Japanese POW camp with stellar writing just as good as Shogun & Taipan.

Historia
After Englishman John Blackthorne is lost at sea, he awakens in a place few Europeans know of and even fewer have seen—Nippon. Thrust into the closed society that is seventeenth-century Japan, a land where the line between life and death is razor-thin, Blackthorne must negotiate not only a foreign people, with unknown customs and language, but also his own definitions of morality, truth, and freedom. As internal political strife and a clash of cultures lead to seemingly inevitable conflict, Blackthorne’s loyalty and strength of character are tested by both passion and loss.

Historia
More than 800 sailors served aboard the Sterett during her hazardous and demanding duties in World War II. This is the story of those men and their beloved ship, recorded by a junior officer who served on the famous destroyer from her commissioning in 1939 to April 1943, when he was wounded at the Battle of Tulagi. Peppered with the kind of vivid, authentic details that could only be provided by a participant, the book is the saga of a gallant fighting ship that earned a Presidential Unit Citation for her part in the Third Battle of Savo Island, where she took on a battleship.

Monotone

Several interesting destroyer events, but mostly a boring, disjointed, monotone war diary with an endless list of ship & personnel credits. Would have benefited from heavy editing and condensing in half. Glad to be finished.

Hero Worship of a Few Ohio Pioneers
Revisado: 06-17-24
Interesting pioneering tales of frontier life in Ohio, the “West” of the early 19th century, but excessive detail about a few early settlers who went no further than Marietta, Ohio. Dragged on with adoration of those “heroic” settlers because they displayed Christian values, truth, justice, and the American Way.

Should be titled “UNFINISHED”. Disappointing!
Revisado: 05-20-24
Incomplete due to the author’s death very early on in the book during building plot tension. The narrative then picks up as a short stories many years earlier & later in Hornblower’s career unrelated to the original story. This book is consequently disordered, disappointing, & overpriced. Not recommended unless a freebie.

Historia
In this seminal story of naval life during the Napoleonic wars, Frederick Marryat's young hero embarks upon a life at sea and finds it to be a rough school indeed. Simple's trials and triumphs, with his faithful mentor, Terence O'Brien, at his side, mirror Marryat's personal experiences. Among the exciting events depicted are the hand-to-hand combat of "cutting-out" missions, the devastating hurricane off St. Pierre, and a mutiny aboard the Rattlesnake.

Written in 1835 the period lends significant authenticity to this novel about a midshipman growing to maturity during the age sailing ships. Interestingly, the author made a couple of guffaws which the narrator pointed out.

Delivers a punch!
Revisado: 04-24-24
Whew! Quite a powerful short story! Set in 1997 aboard a English war ship this story about a an able seaman held appeal to me as an aficionado of sailing ships & its crews. This fiction occurs in that labile period shortly after the English Navy mutinies & not long before Nelson’s feats. I found it necessary to plow through excessive descriptive sentences characteristic of the writing style of Melville’s time but after all the characters were developed the storyline smooths out to become a gripping tale that I won’t soon forget.

Historia
Having entered the British Navy at the age of 12, Horatio Lord Nelson achieved the rank of captain at the age of 20. As captain, he was quickly recognized as a magnetic and controversial figure. He triumphed at Cape St. Vincent and the Nile, but failed at Tenefife and Boulogne. With the glories of Copenhagen and Trafalgar yet ahead of him, his ardent passion for Emma Hamilton, the wife of a British Ambassador, cast a heavy shadow over his career.

A 200 year old account
Revisado: 04-13-24
Hero worship written only 8 years after Nelson’s death in 1805 in the literary style of that period. Interesting tidbits but the story lacks the objectivity of a contemporary biography. Timeline was hard to follow because the 1813 author failed to provide the year of events.

Historia
When Emily Wilson’s translation of The Odyssey appeared in 2017―rendering the ancient poem in contemporary language that was “fresh, unpretentious and lean” (Madeline Miller, Washington Post)―critics lauded it as “a revelation” (Susan Chira, New York Times) and “a cultural landmark” (Charlotte Higgins, Guardian) that would forever change how Homer is read in English. Now Wilson has returned with an equally revelatory translation of Homer’s other great epic―the most revered war poem of all time.

Easy to understand translation
Revisado: 03-28-24
Superb translation & narrative performance of an otherwise challenging classic. Moreover, this is an excellent audible book covering all genres. I recall struggling through a hard to understand translation of the Iliad many years ago in high school, so procrastinated starting this listen for many months. This translation, however, turned out to be fun, exciting, and easy to comprehend. The introduction was helpful but would have benefited by being cut in half.
