Told in language we all can understand, A Brief History of Time plunges into the exotic realms of black holes and quarks, of antimatter and “arrows of time,” of the big bang and a bigger God — where the possibilities are wondrous and unexpected. Stephen Hawking brings us closer to the ultimate secrets at the very heart of creation.

Historia
This landmark book is for those of us who prefer words to equations; this is the story of the ultimate quest for knowledge, the ongoing search for the secrets at the heart of time and space. Its author, Stephen W. Hawking, is arguably the greatest mind since Einstein. From the vantage point of the wheelchair, where he has spent the last 20 years trapped by Lou Gehrig's disease, Professor Hawking has transformed our view of the universe. A Brief History of Time is Hawking's classic introduction to today's most important scientific ideas.

Historia
In Beatrice Prior's dystopian Chicago, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue - Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is - she can't have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.

Unoriginal at best
Revisado: 02-07-24
Just not that good of a story. Feels like it was cut and pasted from other stories, not memorable, with bad character development. Just not for me. Won’t be continuing the series.

Great setup for a thought experiment, poor execution
Revisado: 07-16-22
The author did something amazing with this story: set the stage for a truly original thought experiment: how does a cure for aging impact society? Ideas like the End Specialists, the vector, the cure, the COM, the overstepping of government, and many others were fantastic. I am certain I will find myself pondering more about these and other ideas presented in this novel for years to come.
But the execution was lacking and I think there could have been much more depth to this story with a more refined approach. Every female in this story is a love interest - jaw-droppingly sexy, and they all fall for the main character only to become submissive and doting to him. The only female character that is not like this only serves as a piece of character background rather than a person. The main character is an asshole, and his decision making is unrealistic and not relatable. I found myself saying, “what? Who would do that?” more than a couple times, and I think it distracted me from feeling immersed in the story, as I would begin daydreaming about how I would have handled the situation instead. The issue isn’t that the main character was flawed, it almost felt like he was flawed for no good reason - his assholery didn’t add to the story.
Lastly, this story is essentially about the collapse of society and what I call a “slow Armageddon” - humanity’s crawling descent into chaos - after it encounters a new discovery all-too-powerful for it to handle. In many ways I agree with the author’s depiction on the horrid fate of humanity, but I also think it is too bleak. The main character perceives some of the positive things in his post mortal world as stupid or childish, painting himself as an idiot while also leading the reader to feel like the only reality is one without hope.
It would have been nice to watch a second prominent character live in this new society with a different and more positive outlook.
In all, I’m glad I listened to this book and I thank the author for his work. The positives outweigh the criticisms, and it will be a recommendation I give to others who enjoy a great thought-provoking tale.

Not the best Narnia
Revisado: 04-18-18
Prince Caspian is a very lackluster story, even for a children's series. it lacks interesting plot. every character is static and not a single one has any intriguing changes or does anything unexpected. if this was a stand alone book, and not part of the Chronicles of Narnia, it wouldn't hold up much to any other book similar to it. I still love this series, but I've always thought that this book was on the bottom-most tier. the voice actor for this book did a great job, though!

When Redwall was published in 1987 it catapulted author Brian Jacques to international stardom. And small wonder! This enthralling tale is jam-packed with the things we long for in a great adventure: danger, laughter, hairbreadth escapes, tragedy, mystery, a touch of wonder, a truly despicable villain, and a hero we can take to heart.
