Magical. Simply leaves you a better person.
Revisado: 11-13-24
I don’t review books very often, but I had to leave a review for this one. First, let me say the narrator did a phenomenal job. I wish he could narrate all of the audiobooks I listen to!
The storyline and the plot were special. Mr. Krueger truly has a gift with words and I’m so grateful this book fell into my lap. I don’t want to give the plot away so I will just say this… It left me feeling like I was a better person for having read/listened to it. The author’s voice, coming through the protagonist’s father (a pastor) and brother had such kindness and wisdom. It was very soothing and calming in these crazy times. While the book was set in 1961, the messages subtly and deftly imparted would stand the test of time in any decade.
Highly, highly recommend! If you’re like me, you will be thinking about it for days 😊

Historia
1970s, Southern Alabama. Sixty-two-year-old Jeremiah Lewis Taylor, or “Nub,” has spent his whole life listening to those he loves tell him he’s no good—first his ex-wife, now his always-disapproving daughter. Sure, his escapades have made him, along with his cousin and perennial sidekick, Benny, just a smidge too familiar with small-town law enforcement, but he’s never harmed anyone—except perhaps himself.

Great narrator!
Revisado: 11-05-24
I really loved this book! Everything about it. I don’t think I could get specific and narrow it down as to what made it so special but it left me feeling “good.” I usually read thrillers, and this was such a departure, and I truly enjoyed it. But one of the most noteworthy things was that the author did a spectacular job as a narrator. I have listened to audiobooks in the past where the author has tried to narrate and done such an abysmal job that I find myself silently pleading with them to hire a professional! Sean Dietrich was so talented. He should hire himself out to narrate audiobooks full-time.

At a research station in Antarctica, five of the world's top scientists have been brought together to solve one of the greatest mysteries in human history. Their subject, however, is anything but human. Deep beneath the ice, the submerged ruins of a lost civilization hold the key to the strange mutations that each scientist has encountered across the globe. When a series of sound waves trigger the ancient organisms, a new kind of evolution begins. A long-extinct life form is reborn.

23 chapters too many of minutiae
Revisado: 09-18-24
I rarely write reviews and I almost always love my audiobooks! I generally like my McBride thrillers.
But I feel like I should warn whoever buys this one ahead of time what they’re in for (without any spoilers). A little bit of background in a book for character development and to set the scene is terrific. But I was at chapter 24 before any action of any sort of scary/thriller nature ever got going. It was a lot of (*yawn) scientific background that, to be honest, I just tuned out. I felt like I was back in a college science course. That’s not a bad thing, but I wanted to buy a thriller/horror book and this was not feeling like that.
Thankfully, at about chapter 24, I believe, things started to get heated up~ and then it was very exciting. So if you can stick with it for a pretty slow, pedantic detail-laden first half, you will be rewarded at the end. I also would suggest to Mr. McBride that he hire a professional narrator. He’s not bad, but I think the book would benefit from that.

Make it stop!
Revisado: 07-13-24
I didn’t think I would be writing this review when I began this book. I really enjoyed it at first. But somewhere around halfway through I started falling asleep at the wheel. Wayyy too much detail, backstory, character development and minutia at the expense of momentum, action and excitement that the book had promised.
There are so many wonderful audiobooks to listen to. I would recommend you skip this one.

Frustrating
Revisado: 06-10-24
I don’t usually write reviews. I listen to so many “thriller”audiobooks I imagine I’m hard to impress anymore. This was really promising and for much of the book, I really really enjoyed it! The problem was, at least for me, I was so incredibly frustrated with the protagonist that I just wanted to strangle her! I honestly was not rooting for her success by the end of the book. I found myself saying out loud on more than one occasion “oh my God, what did you expect?” I’m not sure if we were supposed to feel that way~ but if we were, it worked!

Revisado: 03-31-24
I was really struggling to try to find a book that could grab and hold my attention. In this quest, I actually had ordered four audiobooks trying to love one. I stopped and started and stopped again -all of them. None of them could catch my interest. So in a final attempt, I ordered this one. Fifth one’s the charm!
This had a very unique premise, and I don’t want to give anything away…it really tickled my suspense/thriller/creature story bone! I was looking for a follow up to Ania Alhborn’s “The Shuddering” which is one of my very favorites, and I really did enjoy this.

Revisado: 03-07-24
I really enjoyed this book! I had seen some reviews talk about it being disappointing, but for me, it was great. Have I heard better? Sure. But I would definitely recommend this to anybody who enjoys a solid creepy vibe. The narrator was terrific and as far as I’m concerned that could make or break a story.
If there was any weakness at all, it was in the ending. I don’t want to say anything that would be a spoiler of any kind. The whole book was written so well the ending felt akin to taking the ACT and being given a two minute warning that your time was up, but you still had 10 pages to go so you madly scribbled out answers just to finish.

Historia
An eleven-year-old boy lives an idyllic childhood exploring the remote coastal plains and wetlands of South Carolina alongside his parents and his dog, Teach. But when the boy’s eerie and estranged grandfather shows up one day with no warning, cracks begin to form as hidden secrets resurface that his parents refuse to explain. The longer his grandfather outstays his welcome and the greater the tension between the adults grows, the more the boy feels something within him changing—physically—into something his grandfather welcomes and his mother fears. Something abyssal. Something monstrous.

Revisado: 02-14-24
I listen to so many audiobooks sometimes I can’t keep them straight. I won’t have that problem with this one . I began my audiobook journey about four years ago, and I have only felt compelled to write one review in that time-this one. I love a good scary book! This one was so novel in its concept and so different from anything I have listened to before. I didn’t see it coming! There are a few disturbingly gross images if you are sensitive to that, beware. But if you like scary, this is the book for you! This is of a religious good versus evil genre. What a wonderful author and fabulous narrator! I finished my listen in two days. I just couldn’t put it down. Please don’t hesitate to give this a go! I’m now googling what to listen to next just knowing I will be disappointed after this gem!

Now a weekend of family, friends, and fun has turned into a test of love and loyalty in the face of inhuman horrors. The only hope for those huddled inside is to fight - tooth and nail, bullet and blade - for their lives. Otherwise, they’ll end up like the monsters’ other victims: bright pools of blood on glittering snow, screams lost in the vast mountains.

Big fan of this author! I’ve just listened to this book for a second time within a year. It’s so well written, and so well narrated- I’ve been disappointed trying to find another thriller on the same level. So I thought, back to the best! Definitely give it a go!
