Historia
Billy Dee Williams was born in Harlem in 1937 and grew up in a household of love and sophistication. As a young boy, he made his stage debut working with Lotte Lenya in an Ira Gershwin/Kurt Weill production where Williams ended up feeding Lenya her lines. He studied painting, first at the High School of Music and Art, with fellow student Diahann Carroll, and then at the National Academy of Fine Art, before setting out to pursue acting with Herbert Berghoff, Stella Adler, and Sidney Poitier.

Historia
Beloved music critic Tom Breihan's fascinating narrative of the history of popular music through the lens of game-changing #1 singles from the Billboard Hot 100, The Numbers Ones features the greatest pop artists of all time, from the Brill Building songwriters to the Beatles and the Beach Boys; from Motown to Michael Jackson, Prince, and Mariah Carey; and from the digital revolution to the K-pop system. Breihan also ponders great artists who have never hit the top spot, like Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, and James Brown.

Story was great but the narration was infuriating
Revisado: 12-08-22
I enjoyed the subject matter in this book. However, the terrible narration affected the overall experience for me.
Example One: The narrator butchered numerous words and names throughout the course of the story. It was apparent that the narrator didn't care about pronunciation and just slogged along, destroying everything in his path. Example: the word "PERSONA" was pronounced "PERSON A."
Example Two: The start and stop style of the narration was hard to take after a single chapter, let alone twenty-four chapters. Example: "The week that, the single, came out, it dropped, from number one, to, number seven."

Historia
Matt Pinfield is the ultimate music fan. He's the guy who knows every song, artist, and musical riff ever recorded, down to the most obscure band's B-side single on its vinyl-only EP import. As a child, music helped Pinfield make sense of the world. Later he would approach his music idols after concerts and explain why he loved their music. As an adult, rock music inspired his career, fueled relationships, and, at times, became a life raft.

Brag Brag Brag
Revisado: 11-09-22
So, Pinfield was the person who broke Soundgarden, Stone Temple Pilots, Nirvana, Oasis, The Bends album AND Duncan Shiek? Oh, got it. He spends most of the book talking about breaking all the major alternative bands while getting high and taking a lot of drugs. Tiresome and uninteresting.

Historia
Suede began by treading the familiar jobbing route of London's emerging new 1990s indie bands - gigs at ULU, the Camden Powerhaus and the Old Trout in Windsor - and the dispiriting experience of playing a set to an audience of one. But in these halcyon days, their potential was undeniable. Anderson's creative partnership with guitarist Bernard Butler exposed a unique and brilliant hybrid of lyric and sound; together they were a luminescent team - burning brightly and creating some of the era's most revered songs and albums.

Book/Audiobook of The Year
Revisado: 11-08-19
For me, Suede was one of those life-altering bands that had made a major impact. After reading and thoroughly enjoying Anderson's first book, I was looking forward to his chronicle of the halcyon years for his band, from the pinnacle of success to the sputtering halt in 2002. I ended up purchasing the Kindle edition and the audiobook so that I could be fully invested in absorbing every word. In a descriptive, almost prose-like style, Anderson took me on a journey that started with the euphoria and success of the first album to the lackadaisical ambivalence of their fifth release. Anderson details the relationship with Bernard Butler and how things went astray, which was amazing to me because I always wanted to know what truly happened. Truly not your typical autobiography, which was appreciated. Left me looking forward to the next one by Anderson, if there is going to be one more. Hope so.

Historia
Listen to the end for an audiobook exclusive: Brett Anderson in conversation with Matt Thorne, author of Prince. Brett Anderson came from a world impossibly distant from rock star success, and in Coal Black Mornings he traces the journey that took him from a childhood as 'a snotty, sniffy, slightly maudlin sort of boy raised on Salad Cream and milky tea and cheap meat' to becoming founder and lead singer of Suede. Anderson grew up in Hayward's Heath on the grubby fringes of the Home Counties.

Engrossing and Inspiring
Revisado: 11-08-19
Being a massive fan of the Suede music catalog, I had no insight about Brett Anderson's childhood and formative years before the band really took off. I ended up purchasing the Kindle edition and the audiobook so that I absorb as much as possible. This audiobook provided that history and more, as Anderson dives into those years in a uniquely cerebral way. His style reminds me of prose in parts, which is entirely different than any other autobiography that I've come across before. I was able to immerse myself due to Anderson's ability to convey his thought in a descriptive way. I appreciated learning about his family and the experiences that he's been through. The early bits about the band and his friendship with Bernard Butler were the just the icing on the cake for what was a thoroughly engrossing read/listen.
