Historia
A few years after quitting his job to follow an ill-advised dream of becoming a guide on the Colorado River, Kevin Fedarko was approached by his friend, the National Geographic photographer Pete McBride, with a vision as bold as it was harebrained. Together, they would embark on an end-to-end traverse of the Grand Canyon, a journey that, McBride promised, would be “a walk in the park.” Against his better judgment, Fedarko agreed to the scheme. The ensuing ordeal, which lasted more than a year, revealed a place that was richer, and far more complex, than anything the two men had imagined.

Known for her sharp, witty and surreal view on everyday life, Lucy shares the unpredictable craziness of being a mum in this brilliant and laugh-out-loud 'mumoir'. Mums everywhere will recognise the madness of it all. Like when Lucy was hospitalised during her third trimester with chest pains but it turned out to be a burrito. Or when she was so tired at the park she forgot her own child's name.

Historia
More than two centuries after World War III poisoned the planet, the final bastion of humanity lives on massive airships circling the globe in search of a habitable area to call home. Aging and outdated, most of the ships plummeted back to Earth long ago. The only thing keeping the two surviving lifeboats in the sky are Hell Divers - men and women who risk their lives by skydiving to the surface to scavenge for parts the ships desperately need.

Peaks and Valleys
Revisado: 11-07-19
I don't want to be overly negative about this book. Right up front, I need to be clear that I'm almost finished with book four of the series and intend to get five as soon as I finish.
However...
I read a lot of science fiction, perhaps too much. This really isn't science fiction because science plays almost no role. This is Roland Emmerich or Michael Bay science fiction. This is not Neal Stephenson, William Gibson or Dennis E. Taylor. Science fiction should be plausible enough that you can enjoy the story without constantly telling yourself that whatever just happened simply couldn't.
Pretty much every aspect is outside the scope of possibility. The airships float with bladders of helium, The dimensions of the airship are fairly deliberately left vague. However, for the activities that take place on the airship and the amount of stuff they have and places they can go, you would need helium bladders exceeding the size of Manhattan.
The presumption that the food and fuel they find on the surface would be usable after 250 years really is pretty silly. Society used to build things with endurance in mind. All of that has wasted away after 50 or so years. 20 years of unmaintained road will be unusable. Gasoline is pretty much shot after a few months. Rubber tires aren't going to last either. The list goes on and on.
However, the characters are entertaining, if not plausible and the story chugs along in a way that keeps me engaged. It's got some enduringly grim sequences that do go on a bit long but it's worth doing if you can get over the grotesque dumbness of the plausibility.

Historia
Late Victorian London. When James Miller, the most respectable of Scottish businessmen, is pulled, dead, from the Thames, his daughter is drawn into an investigation which reveals a whole world of secrets and corruption. Alongside local detective Culley, Catriona’s search for her father’s killer leads all the way to the tragic truth behind the ghostly legend of The Darkwater Bride and the power of her deadly kiss. The Darkwater Bride combines the genres of the Victorian mystery thriller with the equally classic Victorian mode of the ghostly tale.

Ham handed and indelicate
Revisado: 05-29-19
It's as if you were expecting Masterpiece Theater and got community theater instead.
The plot is not bad but the dialog is. If you listen to a lot of high quality work, you will quickly discover that this is not.
The characters do not seem like people, they seem like actors posing for cast photos. The full cast production allows for several actors to yammer at once, all spewing clunky, predictable dialog on top of each other.
There are several sequences where it's almost unlistenable. When "bad cop" starts yelling "SHUT UP" over and over, I almost quit. When the delicate flower heroine finds herself in a whore house and is being rushed into duty, she seems ok being interrupted over and over and over. Again, I almost quit. When the various women are describing the truly horrible things that happened to them in graphic and terribly realistic terms, again, I almost quit.
Thank god it's only six hours.
The foley work is clumsy and undirected.
As someone who used to listed to radio plays drifting over AM in the middle of the night, I think that whoever directed this should go back and listen to the economy and effectiveness of that golden era.
The actors weren't bad, often pretty good but the dialog was not, nor was the direction. There is really no point in adding lots of ambient sounds to enhance realism when the text of the story is so far from plausible.
The majority of Audible Originals are fantastic, well written and well performed. This was disappointing.

In The Normans, Lars Brownworth follows their story, from the first shock of a Viking raid on an Irish monastery to the exile of the last Norman Prince of Antioch. In the process, he brings to vivid life the Norman tapestry's rich cast of characters: figures like Rollo the Walker, William Iron-Arm, Tancred the Monkey King, and Robert Guiscard. The Normans presents a fascinating glimpse of a time when a group of restless adventurers had the world at their fingertips.

The first Plantagenet king inherited a blood-soaked kingdom from the Normans and transformed it into an empire that stretched at its peak from Scotland to Jerusalem. In this epic history, Dan Jones vividly resurrects this fierce and seductive royal dynasty and its mythic world. We meet the captivating Eleanor of Aquitaine, twice queen and the most famous woman in Christendom; her son, Richard the Lionheart, who fought Saladin in the Third Crusade; and King John, a tyrant who was forced to sign Magna Carta, which formed the basis of our own Bill of Rights.

Exceptional Plantagenet Book
Revisado: 06-18-13
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Just a good read. Great information. Well developed and presented.
What did you like best about this story?
He broke down different periods of Plantagenet rule that have been covered extensively before, with a perspective and clarity that is refreshing. The period with Stephen and Matilda was particularly good.
Any additional comments?
There were a few things that got glossed over, like Edward II but overall it was exceptional.

Revisado: 06-18-13
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
The information was pretty good but the presentation was completely maddening. Some people really like her style but I'm not one of them.
What other book might you compare The Modern Scholar to and why?
This is the first book of the series that I have not thoroughly enjoyed.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
Her approach was over animated and terribly unnecessary.
Do you think The Modern Scholar needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
There are other books in the series on the topic that I will likely get.

Revisado: 01-07-13
Where does The System of the World rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
Best fiction book I've listened to. One of my very favorite books in general.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The System of the World?
There are many. Jack and Gex getting reacquainted was good.
What about the narrators’s performance did you like?
He did a fantastic job with complex material. Often different voices can be distracting be he did an amazing job with some complex material.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
This is the last part of an eight book epic. All of the books are broken into two or three parts. There is nothing about this that could be done in a single sitting.
