Historia
Accidents happen, no matter how careful or well-intentioned you are. Psychiatrist Eve Thayer frequently reassures her patients of that fact. There are even times when accidents have good consequences—like when Eve met her now-husband, Nathan, at his collision shop after another car ran her off the road. After a whirlwind courtship, Nathan and Eve have settled into domestic life. They have a lovely home on a quiet street, a beautiful baby girl, and even the perfect babysitter to care for her. And yet, something isn’t quite right.

A unique twist on a classic

I enjoyed this retelling! Kept me pretty captivated most of the time. There was only one incident near the end that I wish was different, but that is a personal opinion on a plot line. Definitely worth a listen!

So wonderfully and horribly relatable at the same time!
Revisado: 12-09-23
I was really surprised by this book! I went into it expecting a kind of rom-com, that is, a story not to be taken too seriously. But instead I got a story that felt brutally honest and had me looking inward at myself and examining my own habits and feelings in relationships. The main character isn’t shy to explore her questionable actions and be honest about her motivations. It felt like looking in a mirror a lot of the time. Her behaviors and decisions felt very relatable, on a cerebral level if nothing else. Personally, I felt a little like this book motivated me to do a little shadow work and face some of my own questionable behaviors and motivations in relationships. That’s a very personal response to this book, and despite what it may sound like lol, I did very much enjoy this story! I liked its brutal and, often times, uncomfortable but oh-so-relatable honesty. It was not a shallow story, like many rom-coms often feel. But you can’t even put it in that category, I realize. It’s more of a serious story, I felt. It had depth. I think the author did a fantastic job!

I finally understand everything about my life!
Revisado: 07-14-23
This book has changed my life. I’m serious. I cannot emphasize how critically important this book is. I’d swear the author read my childhood diary and wrote a book about it. I didn’t know this level of understanding my own inner struggle was possible. I had determined that I was destined to struggle and wrestle for the rest of my life. That that’s just how life is. But this book made everything make sense! I ordered a hard copy of this book before I even finished the audio version so I can mark, highlight, and write in the margins!
The sense of relief I feel after finishing this book is immense. The author has no idea who I am and yet I feel so seen, understood, and validated in a way I always desperately wanted but never thought possible. For anyone and everyone who grew up with and are experiencing unsatisfactory relationships with their parents, this book is absolutely essential for finding peace and fulfillment in your life. Finally it will all make sense!
As for the narration, I don’t understand the reviewer who said it was so bad they couldn’t get through it. Either a new narrator was recorded since that review, or they just have a different preference. I personally found the narrator to be very easy and soothing to listen to.

Historia
Ruth M. Glenn wasn’t surprised the first time her husband beat her. She was hurt and disappointed but after a childhood in a broken and violent home, she was not surprised. After all, this was just the way things were, right? It was only after she lay bleeding in a carwash parking lot, after being shot three times by him, that Glenn resolved—if she managed to survive—to spend the rest of her life standing up to domestic violence.

Essential Reading
Revisado: 11-07-22
I learned so much. It’s tragic how pervasive domestic violence is in our society and this book really opens your eyes to how essential it is that everyone (and I mean everyone - men and women in all walks of life) educate themselves about it. I really appreciated how the author gave her own personal story in the first half of the book then transitioned into discussing the who, what, when, where, how, why of the subject. She goes into the challenges of helping victims and stopping domestic violence before it even happens. She also talks about ways to help all the way from a legislative to a personal level. It must have been very hard for her to write this book, especially recounting her own survival story, but I am grateful to her for taking on the challenge.

Wasn’t expecting such a good ending!
Revisado: 11-19-21
I do enjoyed this trilogy! We’re parts of it kinda cliché and cheesy? Maybe, lol. But overall I really enjoyed the main themes and messages of the whole trilogy. The author tied up all the plot lines SO beautifully in the end and I even unexpectedly got choked up at one particular resolution! Also, I absolutely LOVED the themes of diversity and inclusion in this trilogy. You’ve got a tough gal, you’ve got a soft, expressive gal, you’ve got so many races and ethnicities, you’ve got nerds and brainiacs, you’ve got buffs, you got a differently abled person, you’ve got guys and gals from privileged and poor backgrounds, you’ve got everyone! That was one of my most favorite things about this trilogy! One last thing, it was such a pleasure to listen to with a full cast of BRILLIANT narrators! Everyone did a SPLENDID job! I’m definitely gonna be listening to this trilogy again and again!

For 150 years, high above rocky Scottish cliffs, Caldonbrae Hall has sat untouched, a beacon of excellence in an old ancestral castle. A boarding school for girls, it promises that the young women lucky enough to be admitted will emerge “resilient and ready to serve society.” Into its illustrious midst steps Rose Christie: a 26-year-old Classics teacher, Caldonbrae’s new head of the department, and the first hire for the school in over a decade.

An easy listen
Revisado: 06-14-21
I did enjoy the story and the setting (love Scotland and England!) but I will say it was a bit on the nose. The main character often seemed to react rather childishly and it was a challenge sometimes to suspend disbelief. I’m a feminist myself but I would have appreciated a story that explored more of the nuances of the unique challenges women face rather than exaggerating stereotypes. If you listen strictly for the sake of entertainment, however, it’s not a bad story. Although I can’t say it’s the best either. I could take or leave it. It missed the mark a bit in the end for me.

So sad this series is over!
Revisado: 04-10-18
This has been one of the most enjoyable and entertaining series I’ve ever listened to. Kevin Hearne and Luke Daniels are the perfect pair for fiction, in my opinion. Hearne with his skills in writing fascinating and complex characters and fantastic adventure, and Daniels in the brilliant ways he captures those characters in voice. I thought Hearne wrote a good ending with an interesting twist that I didn’t see coming but oh I don’t want the series to be over! Hearne was genius with this series.
Daniels is by far my favorite narrator that I’ve come across on Audible so far. His ability to give a unique voice to each character is uncanny. He doesn’t just nail accents perfectly, he goes beyond that and adds personality to the characters. He does subtle things like adding a particular tone or speech habit/style that makes perfect sense for that character. I love his narrating so much that my next book choice will be based on whether Daniels is the narrator or not!
Again, love this series. Plan on listening through again (for the 4th or 5th time now) now that the last book is out. Get this series! Hearne writes such fantastic characters and adventures and Daniels will bless your ears with his brilliant narrating!
