Historia
War Without Mercy has been hailed by the New York Times as "one of the most original and important books to be written about the war between Japan and the United States." In this monumental history, professor John Dower reveals a hidden, explosive dimension of the Pacific War - race - while writing what John Toland has called "a landmark book...a powerful, moving, and evenhanded history that is sorely needed in both America and Japan."

Interesting Insights
Revisado: 03-29-25
I read many books on WW2, but this was one to expose the horrors on both sides of the battlefields in the Pacific. The brutality was not just the consequence of the Japanese refusing to surrender but the West being humiliated by people of Color. The Japanese evicted the Europeans (Dutch, English, and French in Indonesia, Singapore, and Vietnam, respectively) and the Americans (Philippines) from their colonies in the Pacific. Having suffered humiliation, the idea was to make an example of these people who would challenge the West's hegemony. This mindset subsequently led to the loss of human life in Korea and Vietnam and the destruction of the lands and inhabitants of both countries, although we like to hide behind the cliche of "containment of communism." We do not have clean hands, and now, we feel shocked to see Asians (especially the Chinese) do everything possible to defeat the West today on the commercial battlefield.

Historia
This is a nine-book bundle on the Pacific War, the theatre of World War II that was fought in Asia, the Pacific Ocean, the Indian Ocean and Oceania. The Pacific War saw the Allies pitted against Japan, aided by Thailand and its Axis allies, Germany and Italy. Fighting included some of the largest naval battles in history, and the war culminated in the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Poor performances & story
Revisado: 12-10-24
Audio was terrible & storyline betrayed the themes identified in the description . The story added very little to understanding the dynamics of World War 2

Historia
In 1945, the Allied nations agreed on a judicial process, rather than summary execution, to determine the fate of the Nazis following the end of World War II. Held in Nuremberg, the ceremonial birthplace of the Nazi Party, the British, American, French, and Soviet leaders contributed both judges and prosecutors to the series of trials that would prosecute some of the most prominent politicians, military leaders, and businessmen in Nazi Germany.

These eight lectures address two important questions: When is someone else legally responsible for harm done to you? When are you legally responsible for harm done to someone else? This course of eight lectures discusses torts, the body of law designed to redress through civil litigation harms done to persons. As with all bodies of law, in order to analyze the legal implications of a potentially tortious action, it is necessary to blend common sense and pragmatic thinking with an understanding of legal definitions as they have evolved over time.

I was disappointed to hear these lectures. The professor did not draw me into his space by making a dynamic presentation of the subject matter.

Historia
Gangsterismo is an extraordinary accomplishment, the most comprehensive history yet of the clash of epic forces over several decades in Cuba. It is a chronicle that touches upon deep and ongoing themes in the history of the Americas, and more specifically of the United States government, Cuba before and after the revolution, and the criminal networks known as the Mafia.

Ugly International Politics
Revisado: 02-03-16
Would you consider the audio edition of Gangsterismo to be better than the print version?
I brought both the Print and the Audio and followed the Narrative. This is the first time I did it this way. Frankly, For me that worked very well. Last point: I believe the "Title" Gangsterismo is not appealing to the broad audience who I think would find value in reading the book: I suggest "Cuba-Destined for an Overthrow"
What other book might you compare Gangsterismo to and why?
God's Bankers by Posner is the closest I can think of for comparison. Both are well researched and both present shocking insights.
What about Steve Coulter’s performance did you like?
The Performance was melodious, it did not get in the way of the story.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
"The Bad and the Ugly"

From Afghanistan and Pakistan to Yemen, Somalia, and beyond, Scahill speaks to the CIA agents, mercenaries, and elite Special Operations Forces operators who populate the dark side of American war-fighting. He goes deep into al Qaeda-held territory in Yemen and walks the streets of Mogadishu with CIA-backed warlords. We also meet the survivors of US night raids and drone strikes - including families of US citizens targeted for assassination by their own government - who reveal the human consequences of the dirty wars the United States struggles to keep hidden.

Not enough historical insights
Revisado: 06-23-15
Perpetual war is a tough topic to discuss and here the book fails to present the dynamism of Blackwater. Although characterizing many of the combatants as being human beings with a cause is commendable , I think the book would better serve the discussion if it identified two or three themes, such as the profit making war industrial complex and its ability to influence policy regardless of who's in the White House.

I did not "feel" the Philosophers
Revisado: 05-08-15
Would you try another book from The Great Courses and/or Professor Daniel N. Robinson?
I have tried many books from The Great Coursers but this one was not to my liking. The presentation was stale and the great thinkers were not described in a lively way.
Would you ever listen to anything by The Great Courses again?
Yes, I will try other courses
How could the performance have been better?
More enthusiasm

Disappointing Ending
Revisado: 05-23-13
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
Persons who are not critical of Foreign Policy: For example, China has never fought an offensive war in its history. It has been exploited by the British (Opium Wars) and the Japanese (WW II) and now we are to assume it will "attack" the US. in addition, China is doing very well exploiting the Capitalistic System: they have jobs and a favorable balance of trade, why would they want to pursue their objectives militarily. Finally, only one character dies in the story: Trash's wingman= everyone else kils all the bad guys and live on to fight another day. This is beyond preposterous.
Has Threat Vector turned you off from other books in this genre?
No, I just wish that a person with Clancy's mind and resources would try to be more balanced. In my view, he has the Chinese leader practically begging the President for forgiveness.
Which scene was your favorite?
The Author has a solid knowledge of the technical features of the internet and grasp the potential threat from CyberWarfare.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Threat Vector?
The last three chapters need to be rethought. Trash's flight and rescue by Jr. was not credible. No "force" is that dumb. The villagers would have killed both the pilot and Jr.
