Historia
Poison Ivy tells the bigger, seedier story of how elite colleges create paths to admission available only to the wealthy, despite rhetoric to the contrary. Evan Mandery reveals how tacit agreements between exclusive "Ivy-plus" schools and white affluent suburbs create widespread de facto segregation. And as a college degree continues to be the surest route to upward mobility, the inequality bred in our broken higher education system is now a principal driver of skyrocketing income inequality everywhere.

Identifies a real issue in higher education in the United States.
Revisado: 02-26-25
This was a very compelling, well written and well researched commentary on the issues of higher education in the United States and how Ivy league institutions are perpetuating socio-economic inequality through their maintenance of massive endowments, their preferential admission of legacy and sports candidates who do not necessarily demonstrate academic rigour. This is no doubt a serious problem and I commend the author for expounding on it. The book is very radical and offers some perspectives that come across as more activist than intellectual. Particularly, I’m not convinced that suggestions of merit being a myth are helpful (even if they might be true). Despite some areas where I disagree with the author - perhaps due to the radical socialist perspective of some of his views - I enjoyed the book and would recommend it to anyone who is interested in why elite institutions are arguably doing more harm than good.

Historia
Since Hamas's attack on Israel last October 7, the term "settler colonialism" has become central to public debate in the United States. A concept new to most Americans, but already established and influential in academic circles, settler colonialism is shaping the way many people think about the history of the United States, Israel and Palestine, and a host of political issues. This short book is the first to examine settler colonialism critically for a general audience.

Historia
The domestic cat—your cat—has, from its evolutionary origins in Africa, been transformed in comparatively little time into one of the most successful and diverse species on the planet. Jonathan Losos, writing as both a scientist and a cat lover, explores how researchers today are unraveling the secrets of the cat, past and present, using all the tools of modern technology, from GPS tracking (you’d be amazed where those backyard cats roam) and genomics (what is your so-called Siamese cat . . . really?) to forensic archaeology.

Historia
For over a generation, shocking cases of censorship at America's colleges and universities have taught students the wrong lessons about living in a free society. Drawing on a decade of experience battling for freedom of speech on campus, First Amendment lawyer Greg Lukianoff reveals how higher education fails to teach students to become critical thinkers: by stifling open debate, our campuses are supercharging ideological divisions, promoting groupthink, and encouraging an unscholarly certainty about complex issues.

An excellent book on free speech
Revisado: 05-28-22
This book is an excellent nonpartisan defense of free speech on academic campuses. It explores free speech from both liberal and conservative perspectives and illustrates a pervasive quelling of free speech on academic campuses today. While the book is very well researched and written, the narration is somewhat sloppy with a few fumbles and loud breaths in between sentences.

Historia
A liberal society stands on the proposition that we should all take seriously the idea that we might be wrong. This means we must place no one, including ourselves, beyond the reach of criticism; it means that we must allow people to err, even where the error offends and upsets, as it often will." So writes Jonathan Rauch in Kindly Inquisitors, which has challenged listeners for more than 20 years with its bracing and provocative exploration of the issues surrounding attempts to limit free speech.

Have you heard that language is violence and that science is sexist? Have you read that certain people shouldn't practice yoga? Or been told that being obese is healthy, that there is no such thing as biological sex, or that only White people can be racist? Are you confused by these ideas, and do you wonder how they have managed to challenge the logic of Western society? In this probing volume, Helen Pluckrose and James Lindsay document the evolution of the dogma that informs these ideas, from its coarse origins in French postmodernism to its refinement within activist academic fields.

A necessary pursuit of reason amid the postmodernist chaos of the 21st century
Revisado: 11-12-20
This comprehensively researched and eloquently written book pushes back against far-left pseudoscientific postmodernist theory which has overwhelmed popular culture and the media in the 21st century. Despite the pernicious nature of the subject at hand, the authors present a fair and objective critique of postmodernism and offer liberalism as an antidote to this chaos.
