Historia
Aldrich University is rocked to its core when a hacker dumps 40,000 people's e-mails - the entire faculty, staff, students, alums - onto an easily searchable database. Rumors and affairs immediately leak, but things turn explosive when Kit Manning's handsome husband, Dr. Greg Strasser, is found murdered. Kit's sister, Willa, returns for the funeral, setting foot in a hometown she fled 15 years ago, after a night she wishes she could forget. As an investigative reporter, Willa knows something isn't right about the night Greg was killed, and she's determined to find the truth.

Enjoyed most of it, puzzling lack of consequences
Revisado: 04-17-25
I enjoy plenty of these types of murder mystery/nasty neighbor stories where everyone has a secret and this one was among the more enjoyable and more clever for much of the book. I however left it with a weird feeling about the lack of consequences for a particular character who engages in some particularly egregious sexual crimes. I'm no prude, nor do I need these types of stories need to be realistic, or some morality endeavor. I read them to be entertained and this largely did that with good writing, fun twists, and good misdirection. But a couple days later what I remember is still an unsatisfying gross feeling about how that plot line was handled and wrapped up so I knocked a point off. To each their own though, might not bother others but for me it did!

The world has changed. Now, when someone is murdered, they almost always come back to life—and there are professionals, called “dispatchers”, who kill in order to save lives, to give those near the end a second chance. Tony Valdez is a dispatcher, and he has never been busier. But for as much as the world has changed, some things have stayed the same. Greed, corruption, and avarice are still in full swing.

Not the ending I'd Hoped for
Revisado: 07-31-24
Disappointing end of the trilogy. Listened to this series on a road trip with my wife and this one stuck out for all the wrong reasons. The odd insertion of the pandemic seemed to denial the plot setup from the prior story ending and was distracting but perhaps most annoyingly it felt like there was a change to the rules of the universe suddenly added in this book with a time limited reset being emphasized and utilized in a way never previously discussed that felt tacked on and at odds with the prior stories. A bit of a dud for me! Reader remained excellent though and the series overall was a fun and interesting concept.

Disappointment. Less than it seemed.
Revisado: 07-31-24
Having enjoyed a number of books by the author and finding the description interesting this book was a major disappointment. I don't expect much more than a breezy techno thriller from these sorts of reads but this one had more dull than usual characters with little connection or relationships to speak of, quickly dispatched in many cases with no impact, and the main plot was a bit of a bait and switch leaving me wondering where the exploration of technology run amok I thought I was getting went. Bummer all around for me.

Quick, breezy listen with fun setup but unsatisfying wrap up imho
Revisado: 06-13-24
Second book by the author and I do enjoy her style and found this book easy to listen to. the characters and setup were at least up to par with the genre average and the questions/story setup was intriguing and kept my attention. I didn't however find the final 20 percent up to snuff. the psychological angle IMHO got tossed aside and silliness ramped up beyond what I was willing to suspend disbelief for down the stretch. I don't regret the time, but even in a genre known for going to 11 I found this ones shift from fairly grounded to rapid plot wrap up too jarring. your mileage may vary! Will continue to keep an eye out for other books by the author however as there is talent there even if this one wasn't my cup of tea.

It was no Jurassic Park, fine but unremarkable.
Revisado: 05-25-24
I thought the setup was better than the payoff. I even enjoyed that they acknowledged JP in the canon but the second half and threat were silly to me with the science and thought slipping quickly into the background of a mediocre action book. Characters nor plot did much to stick with me or force me to keep listening. It was fine entertainment for a few days, not memorable and a bit of a letdown in my opinion.

Tremendous book. having watched all of The Expanse show several years ago I'm finally coming back to the books and was not disappointed. while quite long the depth, character development, and world building are top notch. Narration also very good here.

Neat concept, rough execution
Revisado: 07-07-23
Finished it so it did enough to keep me listening the end but I found it to be an underwhelming book with an interesting premise it failed to do much with. Not Sci fi enough nor mystery enough to satisfy either genre itch for my tastes by the end. Killed some time but not much else to say about this one. Narration was perfectly fine.

it was totally adequate background noise
Revisado: 06-23-23
I don't think this is a very good book. Even by the standard of sort of silly murder novels which i often enjoy it was pretty poor in my estimation with generic characters, a lackluster plot, and cheesy dialogue. I did finish it over a couple days though so it wasn't unlistenable and the narration was fine. For my 3 or 4 dollars on sale I felt like I got my money's worth, for a credit or full price I'd have been quite annoyed.

Not what it seems, but maybe not for the best?
Revisado: 05-30-23
I don't want to spoil the book but it is in fact not what it appears to be at the outset or even half way through though in my opinion the twists and turns are neither earned nor felt like payoffs for any real groundwork laid out earlier. Characters were shallow, story moved along briskly albeit it also didn't exactly have a lot of depth beyond attempts to shock and surprise. The narration was perfectly fine with a handful of repeated lines or audio glitches.
Not every book needs to be a masterpiece, it kept me entertained enough to get to the end while doing chores for a few days. Though admittedly, I suspect I'll forget about it quickly and certainly won't be recommending it to friends.

Fun listen, liked but didn't love it.
Revisado: 05-08-23
Found this to be a fun listen. Nowhere near a masterpiece or even in the ballpark of Crichton's best work but enjoyable with a quality narrator adding to a fine time manipulation/Sci fi storyline.
