I first heard of Witney Duan after a lengthy interview on CBS 6O Minutes more than 10 years ago and had always been fascinated about her rags to riches story and how she became richest woman in China. Red Roulette helps to put her story in proper perspective. Desmond Shum has done a perfect job explaining China to a wider audience in ways nobody else has done. This was such an easy, free flowing listen.

I started listening to this audiobook not knowing what to expect. Through one gripping narrative after another, Adam Frankel tells a story about mental illness, betrayal, forgiveness and healing.

I’ve always known that Billie Jean King was a pioneer sports woman but didn’t appreciate the extent of her work and influence until listening to the audio book. I got to learn about the other 8 women who pioneered women’s tennis association 50 years ago. I’m truly inspired and in awe of what she did and continues to do for women sports and athletes

I started listening to this book without knowing anything about the author. Days later I’m happy a gave it a chance. Whether you suffer from mental illness or know someone who does, this tome is a helpful companion written plainly and humorously even while dealing with a very difficult subject. As the relative of someone recently diagnosed with depression, it offers candid insights on what one should do and what you shouldn’t.

This is a very powerful but succinct narrative on the rise and reign of Margaret Thatcher. It tells the concise story of modern conservatism in Britain and partly explains the road to Brexit. Highly recommended for anyone wishing to breeze through modern British history and politics

In terms of audio performance this was an excellent book but it came off lacking in substance. It’s a trashy book full of the author’s foibles and peccadilloes.

At times gut wrenching and bone chilling, this was a vivid account of how a respected sports medicine doctor abused the trust of his office and sexually molested and assaulted dozens of years. It detailed how Larry Nasser was able to carry out his assaults in the full glare of public and the various institutional failures that enabled his behavior. This is a must listen!

I didn’t watch Little House on the Prairie and don’t know much about the show but I feel the author magically transported me to the set. I was appalled at the horrific abuse suffered by the author but also encouraged by her gallows humor. This was an otherwise tragic story but told with so much grace

This was a very interesting listen. It is a story of a western academic who travels to Iran to attend a rare international conference and ends up a captive of the brutal Iranian dictatorship masquerading as an Islamic republic. Australian academic Dr. Kylie Moore-Gilbert narrates her more than two year ordeal in the hands of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps - part government within a government, part enforcers and elite thugs. The events she describes are not new but offer an interesting look, from the perspective of a non-Iranian, into Iran’s brutal regime and it’s equally heartless control over its people. I happened to have done a deep dive into recent Iranian history. Under the former regime of the late Shah, overthrown in 1979, the Savak - the Shah’s feared secret police, methods not unlike those described by Dr. Moore-Gilbert were widely used against the Iranian people. Despite the savagery of the Savak, at least the general atmosphere wasn’t as repressive as those Kylie described. I’m happy that she was able to return to Australia at the end of her ordeal. But for tens of thousands of ordinary Iranians, the suffering continues. As Kylie Moore-Gilbert enjoins us in the epilogue to her book, let’s keep these and ordinary Iranians in our thoughts and prayers.

Peter Zeihan is a brilliant strategist and I usually enjoy listening to him. While I broadly share his optimism about the future of America, this book sounds too pessimistic about other parts of the world while painting America as the El Dorado. He tries to sound like an impartial scholar but he comes off as a chorus boy for American imperialism. He minimizes the growing illiberalism of mostly White, evangelical and the dangers that poses to both the United States and the world
