It’s no Aubrey/Maturin
Revisado: 08-09-24
I just finished all of the Aubrey Maturin books, and while the prose is lovely and the adventure stories are well thought out and told, it doesn’t have the personality that O’Brien’s characters have. The whole thing is told from Hornblower’s POV and most of the stories are “he didn’t want to do it, and he was scared, but then he did it and was amazing”.
Narrator was great though.

Historia
The New York Times Book Review called Neal Stephenson's most recent novel "electrifying" and "hilarious". But if you want to know Stephenson was doing 20 years before he wrote the epic Cryptonomicon, it's back-to-school time. Back to The Big U, that is, a hilarious send-up of American college life starring 30-year-old junior Casimir Radon.

It’s the bones of what Stephenson would become.
Revisado: 08-05-24
He’s my favorite author and it’s all here. There are themes he’ll revisit many times in future books. But it’s not quite up to that standard yet. Lots of characters who I never quite fell for, and maybe a bit too much of his florid descriptions. But enjoyable enough for a fan of Stephenson’s work.

Historia
Fraa Erasmus is a young avout living in the Concent of Saunt Edhar, a sanctuary for mathematicians, scientists, and philosophers, protected from the corrupting influences of the "Saecular" world by ancient stone, honored traditions, and complex rituals. Over the centuries, cities, and governments have risen and fallen beyond the concent's walls. Three times during history's darkest epochs, bloody violence born of superstition and ignorance has invaded and devastated the cloistered mathic community.

Even better many years later.
Revisado: 02-15-23
I am a Neal Stephenson fiend, and I read this when it first came out. I remember having a hard time getting into it, and then liking it well enough. Well, 15 years later, I loved it even more. It’s everything I want out of Neal, and when it clicks, it’s all worth it. But I understand why a lot of people don’t take to it. But there are seeds in here of Seveneves and Fall and even Termination Shock. The narrator also did Cryptonomicon, so it was familiar. He did add hard Cs to words that didn’t have them. Like “flaccid” pronounced “flack-Sid”. Someone else complained about the dictionary narrator. That was Stephenson himself. Oh well.

Historia
Millions of words have poured forth about man's trip to the moon, but until now few people have had a sense of the most engrossing side of the adventure: namely, what went on in the minds of the astronauts themselves - in space, on the moon, and even during certain odysseys on earth. It is this, the inner life of the astronauts, that Tom Wolfe describes with his almost uncanny empathetic powers that made The Right Stuff a classic.

Maybe the best audiobook I’ve ever listened to.
Revisado: 09-13-19
The prose is absolutely lovely. The stories are riveting, and after a bit of warm up, Dennis Quaid delivers probably the best reading I’ve ever heard. What a treat this was.
