Historia
In his own day the dominant personality of the Western Church, Augustine of Hippo today stands as perhaps the greatest thinker of Christian antiquity, and his Confessions is one of the great works of Western literature. Now modern listeners will have easier access to St. Augustine's deeply personal meditations. Chadwick's lucid translation and helpful introduction clear the way for a new experience of this classic.

Historia
Written by John Owen, one of the best known of the Puritans. In The Mortification of Sin, John Owen insisted on the importance of the Christian dealing effectively with their sinful tendencies and attitudes. He believed that God, through his Word and Spirit, had provided the guidelines and the power for this to be achieved. Owen effectively dismisses various excuses for not engaging in self scrutiny and yet avoids the current trend of self absorption.

Historia
“Amazing grace, how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me.” So begins one of the most beloved hymns of all time. This is the autobiography of the man who penned those words. John Newton, the self-proclaimed “wretch”,was an active slave trader for several years until, on a homeward voyage through a violent storm, he experienced what he was later to refer to as his “great deliverance.” He tells of the dramatic, real-life events that led him from sin and bondage to a life transformed by God’s grace.

Better than nothing
Revisado: 10-27-24
This book was actually played from a cassette and then recorded that way because the quality is not as good and it even says so halfway to flip to side B. Since it was free I can’t complain too much but hopefully there will come a better version later.

This explosive new audiobook challenges many of the long-held assumptions about blacks, about Jews, about Germans and Nazis, about slavery, and about education. Plainly written, powerfully reasoned, and backed with a startling array of documented facts, Black Rednecks and White Liberals takes on the trendy intellectuals of our times as well as historic interpreters of American life.

One of the finest books written in and for society and culture. If people acknowledged the facts within these writings and welcomed one another in recognizing history for what it is, then there would be much less hostility and hatred towards their fellow man.

Historia
Martin Luther entered a monastery as a youth and as a man shattered the structure of the medieval church, speaking out against the corrupt religious practices of the time. His demand that the authority for doctrine and practice be scriptures, rather than popes or councils, echoed around the world and ignited the great Reformation. Accused of heresy and threatened with excommunication and death, Luther maintained his bold stand and refused to recant. In his crusade to eliminate religious abuses, he did more than any other man to establish the Protestant faith.

Historia
Booker T. Washington fought his way out of slavery to become an educator, statesman, political shaper, and proponent of the "do-it-yourself" idea. In his autobiography, he describes his early life as a slave on a Virginia plantation, his steady rise during the Civil War, his struggle for education, his schooling at the Hampton Institute, and his years as founder and president of the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama, which was devoted to helping minorities learn useful, marketable skills.

When you come across a work that ticks all the boxes of what makes something great, what can you really say if you’re so taken aback by your admiration of that person? I’m not a literary aficionado who can iterate a fantastic paragraph but whatever positive review they would give, I would agree wholeheartedly. This is one amazing journey and I’m glad it is considered a classic piece of literary history. Anyone would be inspired and awed at what Mr. Washington achieved.

Historia
In December 1937, in the capital of China, one of the most brutal massacres in the long annals of wartime barbarity occurred. The Japanese army swept into the ancient city of Nanking and within weeks not only looted and burned the defenseless city but systematically raped, tortured and murdered more than 300,000 Chinese civilians. Amazingly, the story of this atrocity- one of the worst in world history- continues to be denied by the Japanese government.

I had to take breaks because the unhinged depravity contained in this book is as quoted in the book itself, unimaginable. This is a superb historical resource that should be at minimum, required reading in undergraduate schools and maximum mandatory for any history major.

Historia
The French Revolution casts a long shadow, one that reaches into our own time and influences our debates on freedom, equality, and authority. Yet it remains an elusive, perplexing historical event. Its significance morphs according to the sympathies of the viewer, who may see it as a series of gory tableaux, a regrettable slide into uncontrolled anarchy - or a radical reshaping of the political landscape. In this riveting new book, Ian Davidson provides a fresh look at this vital moment in European history. He reveals how it was an immensely complicated and multifaceted revolution....

A great but possibly frustrating read
Revisado: 12-04-22
It is wonderfully detailed and the narration is superb. My only complaint with this work is that the narrator is essentially speaking French for half of the book. I respect that he’s doing due diligence to the names, titles, and incidents of the people and what happened during those times but unless you are pretty familiar with the French language then in my opinion, it can be difficult to keep up without having to pause and think of what the words mean in English or even having to google them for a full understanding. This is my experience and I would still recommend it with full praise however I offer my experience as a caution to any further readers.
