Historia
Sasha Pierce hasn’t had a single dream since she was a child...until she accepts a substitute teaching position in the charmingly witchy village of Old Middleton. Her first dream in twenty-five years ought to be enchanting, but her wonder quickly turns to shock when she realizes that it’s not a dream at all, but an entirely different sort of magic. Catapulted through an ancient portal into the fairytale kingdom of Between, Sasha’s astonishment is swiftly upgraded to panic when she accidentally performs a supposedly impossible feat and is declared the True Queen of Between.

Fun and clever
Revisado: 08-27-23
This was a joy to read. The word smithing was clever and amusing, and the characters likable. The premise was fun and the motivations of the characters made sense. The narration was excellent.
The second book is written from the perspective of the male protagonist and, unfortunately, starts the story all over again from his perspective. Though I would normally stop reading a book for this reason (I get impatient when there isn’t enough forward progression) I kept with it because the writing was excellent and they spent so little time together, there wasn’t that torturous feeling of “I just read this, I know what happens”. It really did introduce a whole new plot. I do wish she had alternated perspectives instead, but watcha gonna do? I will definitely read the next book in this series when it is out.

Historia
We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

Exciting, hilarious, and heart-warming
Revisado: 12-31-22
I'd recommend this book to anyone who'd listen. The 2 main characters are not just hilarious, they are lovable. The MC is sarcastic and brutally honest with more humble, unselfish integrity in his pinky finger than most people could dream of.
I love an underdog story, and I appreciated the approach the author took in the novel to put humans "in their place." We are not the powerhouse. Oh, no. We are the ants, the aliens are the boot (for you fellow Marvel lovers out there).
Somehow, the lowliest of the humans rises, then falls, then rises again (etc.) to save the day with the help of his quirky IA companion. I love the "buddy comedy" aspects of the novel (everyone loves a good buddy comedy) and the heart-warming aspects. The MC is an imperfectly perfect young man from a small town. He sees his rise in rank and responsibility as a matter of luck. As the reader, you know it's so much more than that, yet, he would never see it that way himself, and that's what makes him so unique and such a great leader.
This novel is an important reminder that even the most powerful among us can be humbled by a situation, a more powerful force, a more intelligent being, a more capable fighter, a more powerful weapon, etc, etc, etc.

Hard to get invested
Revisado: 12-24-22
I love reading book series, and I thought overall this was well-written. The trouble for me was the characters. They were one-dimensional and immature- even the adults and immortals acted like pre-teens, sulking and having tantrums and whatnot. It was hard for me to get invested in a character who sulks for 2 months if a boy doesn’t like them but shrugs it off when people are murdered.

This is an exciting and fun book but with heart. There is some real people dealing with real grief, yet the action and romance offer life to the story. And hope. We can all use a little of that.

Sad. I liked the first one...
Revisado: 03-22-22
The first book in the series was great. The writing was clever and engaging, the narration was clear, the narrator was charming. I liked it so much I bought this one.
In this book, the lovable main character disappears completely. Like, poof! Where'd he go? And she barely seems to care, just moving on to the next shmuck. And after a cliffhanger in the first book! Instead, I found myself stuck listening to the story written from the perspective of the female character.
FYI, this narrator sounds like a fifth-grader and it is super distracting. Her voice would work for a quirky character I suppose, but Desdaemona is...not. Not at all quirky. She is boring. And selfish. And kind of awful all around. I mean, she's strong and I guess she tries to do the right thing sometimes but that's the only thing I can even say about her. Why are all these men drawn to her? Sheesh. I don't get it. It's almost like it's written by a different author and this is a spin-off. Maybe the ending tied it all together but I was bored and couldn't finish. :(

Abuse is abuse
Revisado: 01-09-20
I had a very hard time listening to this book after awhile. I found my empathy with Brie waning chapter by chapter. They say people who were abused tend to abuse, but there’s no excuse for it. I’m sorry there’s no excuse for a woman to hurt a man! It’s just as wrong!!! I get she was frightened, but seriously. After she lashed out at him once and he never even touches her, you’d think she’d get a clue? But no. She just keep hitting him, kicking him, etc. I didn’t like her one bit, and I didn’t appreciate the double standard.

I've spent my entire adult life avoiding dating, which is funny because I work for a matchmaking service. My boss calls me "The Beast" because of my no B.S. attitude. My job is to scare away problem clients - the unmatchables. In waltzes Mister Alfred Barnes. He's stuck up, brazen, and mouthwateringly gorgeous. Guys like him think they own the world, but in here I'm in charge. Kicking him out of my office is one of my greatest pleasures...until I find out that he totally lied about his identity.

Not my favorite
Revisado: 01-02-20
I liked the concept of this book- recovering from trauma and healing, but it has major issues. A psychiatrist would NEVER disclose who her patients were! If they did, they would probably lose their license. A psychiatrist would also immediately cut ties with a patient when she realized there was a conflict of interest. So, after the book hit this point, it was so unrealistic that I kind of tuned out.
I am not a fan of this narrator either. Her male voice is kind of monotone, and her female voice is odd. Hard to explain, but her tone and word emphasis follows the same pattern, over and over again. To me, a reader should need to be a great actor/actress for me to become invested in the story.

Sweet story!
Revisado: 01-25-19
This book started out pretty intense. My heart was racing like crazy as they escaped their life and death situation! Of course, I am a huge action fan, so I enjoyed it. I loved how the 2 main characters handled the intense situation with mostly realistic-sounding flubs and flaws and embarrassment. To me, it was how 2 real people would handle fear and panic- just doing the best they can to get through it, then freaking out when it was over. No superheroes here! The characters grew on me quickly with their slightly quirky personalities, their humor, and their kindness toward people and animals (how could you not love that!). I know I love a book when I laugh out loud several times- which I did. I highly recommend!
