Narrators Ruin an An Interesting Series
Revisado: 05-04-25
I’m an avid reader of Tudor England fiction and non-fiction. The author’s focus on these three women offered many important insights into what their lives may have entailed in the hothouse of the Henry VIII era. Both of the narrators used in the series, however, are unbearable.
The first reader adopts a bizarre, high-pitched, sing-song style, even in scenes of high drama and tragedy. The second reader speeds through the text (I put it in .9 to make it through.) and offers odd pronunciations of common words. Both readers also do a terrible job with male characters and younger women. I finished the series but regret the investment of time, due to the choices of the narrators. I expected more of an Audible-produced work.

Historia
Settled down in his beloved Mortlake once again, philosopher and astronomer John Dee is enjoying the quiet life when Her Majesty’s spymaster Sir Francis Walsingham darkens his door, instructing him to befriend a certain Polish count with an interest in alchemy and angelic communication. But when Dee and the count are caught breaking the law, trying to convene with angels, they are exiled, and must make their way to the court of Rudolf, Holy Roman Emperor, in far-off Prague.

Gave Up on Narrator
Revisado: 12-27-23
I love Elizabethan historical fiction and I love books that come in a series. These books were engaging (although I found some of the plots to wander off at times). I did not finish the third book, however, as the narrator finally exhausted my patience. At times whispering, at other times slurring the words, it was simply too much effort to understand what was happening - particularly in the Prague segments. Disappointed.

Historia
Shocking and controversial when it was first published in 1939, Steinbeck's Pulitzer prize-winning epic The Grapes of Wrath remains his undisputed masterpiece. Set against the background of Dust Bowl Oklahoma and Californian migrant life, it tells of Tom Joad and his family, who, like thousands of others, are forced to travel west in search of the promised land. Their story is one of false hopes, thwarted desires, and broken dreams, yet out of their suffering Steinbeck created a drama that is intensely human, yet majestic in its scale and moral vision.

A Masterpiece in Spite of the Harmonica
Revisado: 10-18-21
I was reminded once again of the timeless themes of oppression, hope and humanity that are at work in in this masterpiece of American literature. Dylan Baker’s portrayal of each character is brilliant. The harmonica musical interludes are a jarring and unpleasant distraction.
