I really love James Holden
Revisado: 01-08-22
Book 9 A lot has transpired since Leviathan Wakes. I can't say I loved all books equally but I did like this book and I loved the series. . I wish some of the characters who passed in the early books could have read these with me to see the reconciliation of sorts that occurs; no spoilers here. Especially Bobbi who I miss like the high school crush I never had the courage to talk to back then. The band or what is left is back together, or those. that are left. Holden rediscovers his center, Naomi is the rock of the Rosinanti, Amos .. well he is still Amos, a character who over time may be my favorite and I am thinking he was a fun character to write. And Alex, well while he is great pilot, loyal as all get out, and a really sensitive guy .. but would I want to hang out with him ? a bit simpering for my taste. The supporting characters are good, the good guys and women and the bad. The kid is great.
So for fans of all the books trust me this is worthy. There is reconciliation of sorts. Like in the Wheel of Time It is not The End but an ending this book is a fitting finish.

Historia
Civil war looms in the Bobiverse in this brand-new, epic-length adventure by Audible number one best seller Dennis E. Taylor. More than a hundred years ago, Bender set out for the stars and was never heard from again. There has been no trace of him despite numerous searches by his clone-mates. Now Bob is determined to organize an expedition to learn Bender’s fate - whatever the cost. But nothing is ever simple in the Bobiverse. Bob’s descendants are out to the 24th generation now, and replicative drift has produced individuals who can barely be considered Bobs anymore.

keep it coming Bob ..
Revisado: 09-07-21
This book was consistent with the other Bobiverse books in that there is a story that kept my interest with humor and compassion. Sometimes I get a little confused flipping from Bob, to Bill, to Will etc. But that is on me not DET. I love all the retro references and while I typically don't go for the out of body characters Dennis E. Taylor pulls it off where the various Bob's have enough character that each stands out. There is action in the main plot line with the added side story of the evolution of the Bob's. Not to dense yet interesting and thought provoking with some fun stuff. I like these books and really enjoyed this latest dalliance in the Bobiverse.

There is always a hook with these Black Jack books
Revisado: 06-06-16
I generally enjoy this series. There is always a plot line that I want to see get resolved, so I dig in. As a long time fan of science fiction; since the 60's with the likes of Heinlein, Clarke, Le Quinn, etc. I think I have a perspective on the genre that is worthwhile. I do recall a la Star Trek that sci-fi used to be more optimistic about the prospect of humanity evolving into something better, morally than we are now. The Lost Fleet series seems to contradict that, as a species we are warlike, petty, and the reality of power and money has moved to a bigger arena in a galactic sense. On the other hand I am not a monk and I don't mind a good shoot em up space story. And Black Jack with his commitment to honor and decency seems to be the best we can hope for, and apparently Democracy flawed as it appears in these books is also the best we can hope for. The juxtaposition with the Syndicate Worlds, totalitarian vs. somewhat democratic with a hero like Black Jack seems to sell, and yes I have been buying. By now I think some of the obvious qualities like the impact of distance with regard to space battles and communication seems redundant, and at this point there is a fair amount of repetition is the dialogue and explanations,, BUT I figure what the heck there is always a hook.. so I read/listen on.

Fitz, Fitz, fitz !
Revisado: 05-03-16
you have to admit if Fitz was a friend you'd box his ears for being such a self loathing fool.
and frankly sometimes it does wear on me, and i do think this book could have been a little shorter, having said that i feel like I've know the lad since he was a boy and as much as he can be annoying he is a hero with flaws and without question he has suffered some reversals in his life. And face it at 59 I have lived a full life, not as an assassin or with the skill but i don't move quite the same as I did at Fitz's younger days. i feel like if I say anymore it could be a spoiler so i won't . I will say the introduction of Bee is lovely and I am looking forward to the third book, I would recommend this book, I think only if you have listened to the previous series, As far as the narrator well he is not the same, and the Fool's voice is odd but I don't think it is horrible it's just different.

A good combination of space and magic
Revisado: 04-12-16
Ones person magic might be another's technology. The story was a simple military science fiction, in a tradition of Asimov or modern day Jack Campbell. I am looking forward to the next two books even though I typically like longer stories, I like to get my credit's worth. It does make me speculate when Brandon Sanderson is going to bring his mystborn series into outer space, and Sanderson is a better writer for sure. So I would recommend this story, it is an action paced story with a clear delineation of the good guys vs the bad. Not the deepest of stories but enjoyable.

The series is five stars
Revisado: 04-08-16
Considering how popular this book, and series is, writing another five star review is a bit redundant. But here it is, This series and book three is outstanding. Probably the best science fiction I have read in a long time. The tension throughout the series is maintained with the world building growing along with the characters. I like the class juxtaposition between all the different "colors" without it becoming too preachy. The Golds are heavy handed, autocratic, and as a model for society something that any fascist would appreciate. I was weaned on 60's science fiction and consequently I like good vs the bad guys, I like science fiction that allows for the possibility of human progress. I loved the relationship between Darrow and Sevro, buddies yet with some conflict. Overall this book concluded the series. I would love to see more, BUT no prequels please :)

In 1921 a small group of self-appointed patriots set out to avenge the deaths of almost one million victims of the Armenian Genocide. They named their operation Nemesis after the Greek goddess of retribution. Over several years the men tracked down and assassinated former Turkish leaders. The story of this secret operation has never been fully told until now.

A tragic story well told.
Revisado: 01-24-16
As an Armenian American and the grandson of Genocide survivors I found this to be a fascinating story of both the events leading up to 1915 as well as the history leading up to the Genocide and the aftermath. My families story came from the survivor's who were peasants from Anatolia and frankly I don't think they cared about the real politic of the events. I also am a big fan of Eric Bogosian, although if you have never listened to his own stories be for warned the content is slightly different :) . What I especially like about this book was the history and Bogosian's recognition of the moral ambiguity of revenge and murder.. As someone who was raised with the "turk" being the personification of evil, and trust me I believe evil was done, it is still a slippery slide to decide whose freedom fighters are terrorist's and who are simply freedom fighters. It is hard for me not to feel some vindication about what Bogosian chronicles BUT I appreciate his own recognition of the moral questions involved.

Historia
From the best-selling author of Assassination Vacation and Unfamiliar Fishes, a humorous account of the Revolutionary War hero Marquis de Lafayette - the one Frenchman we could all agree on - and an insightful portrait of a nation's idealism and its reality. Lafayette in the Somewhat United States is a humorous and insightful portrait of the famed Frenchman, the impact he had on our young country, and his ongoing relationship with instrumental Americans of the time.

I happen to Love Sarah Vowell's voice and reading
Revisado: 11-30-15
Maybe I have a soft spot from Sarah' time on This American Life. I find her reading; and writing to be full of irony and self deprecation. It probably helps that her political views and mine are similar as well. As a kid my "favorite" war taught in school was the Revolutionary War. This was a good easily accessible snapshot into the war and a very interesting Frenchman who played an important role. I learned something about some of the details and enjoyed the writing and Sarah's presentation. If you look at my other reviews you'll notice that I primarily listen to Sci Fi and Fantasy, given that I rarely pass on one of Sarah's books. I would recommend this book, and her others, Assignation Vacation and the Wordy Shipmates to all.

Historia
From the Audie-nominated narrator of The Martian. In eleven years' time, a million members of an alien race will arrive at Earth. Years before they enter orbit, their approach will be announced by the flare of a thousand flames in the sky, their ships' huge engines burning hard to slow them from the vast speeds needed to cross interstellar space. These foreboding lights will shine in our night sky like new stars, getting ever brighter until they outshine even the sun, casting ominous shadows and banishing the night until they suddenly blink out.

They are coming and a few are already here
Revisado: 10-25-15
Some nasty aliens and characters that are likable. It goes into a lot of specific military protocol type stuff which frankly I don't really enjoy but a lot of modern hard science fiction does these days, so while the details of the "command structure" I think gives our military best perhaps a little too much credit I do like the central underpinning of the story, the age old War of The Worlds riff of first contact and alien's. I am anxious to listen to the two other books in the series to fully judge this effort but for now I would definitely recommend this book.

A solid Effort
Revisado: 10-25-15
I liked this series more than I initially expected. The literary device at the beginning to bring the charterers from"our" world to the alternative fantasy world was a little clunky. And lets face the world building without JRR Tolkien would not have happened, The dwarves and the characters who were in effect the Elves, even to some of the details was not quite copy and paste but pretty darn close. But what fantasy, especially high adventure fantasy doesn't owe Tolkien? Some are more inclined to use it for inspiration while others need to mine Middle Earth a tad more specifically. As a story I liked the characters, they developed as the story progressed, I cared what happened to them and the magic was cool. That seems to be a good way to spend 40 hours of audio time.. I like the longer stories and I would recommend this one.
