Sci fi spy thriller

The action plays very well, like a Jason Bourne movie. Besides feeling like a spy thriller, the context deals with a sci fi existential threat, with intelligent and big picture perspectives, like a game of chess.

This trilogy is worth the read, and R.C. Bray does a great performance. One or two of his female voices sound a bit like a deflated tranny, but otherwise he's great.

Diversity of plot lines

Book reads like a Disney sitcom. Lots of dramaticism and pettiness between a bunch of teens. This is essentially sci fi litrpg hogwarts, and it appears the MC won't have anymore fulfilling challenges besides avoiding getting bullied in the lunch hall, for the next several books at least.

Great concepts, and a book for young adults is perfectly fine, but it is not for me.

Consistently surpassing expectations.

Big fan of this series. It was my first foray into litrpg and remains my favorite. I'm glad as the series continues, that Jake doesn't fall into the typical trappings of a hero complex, as he is party to events most certainly un heroic in this book.

I will say it may be the less exciting or interesting book in a while, not as cool as interesting as the treasure hunt in the last book, no significant changes in general really. sometimes the narrative simply needs to be moved forward, as an evolution is surely around the corner in the next book.

That being said, this book definitely still had its interesting concepts and riveting narrative, and was thoroughly worth the listen.

World building, THEN fun

I'd like to leave a warning, alongside my five star rating. The beginning and quite a few hours into the book is alot of world building. If you're familiar with the litrpg genre you'll know that vrmmos have the easiest premise to swallow. The real world and the game tie back and forth as they continue to world build, and the book starts off from a position where you really don't respect the main character. all this aside, the character has to earn his respect through the narration, from you the reader.

This takes a little while. If you've played mmos or have enjoyed this genre, give this book some time. There is an eventual turning point where the MC does some really cool stuff to establish himself, and it only takes off from there. There's also good humor throughout and great male and female voice acting.

The story itself is a vrmmo which is shaped by the characters, able to impact the whole world through the ripple system. This is a narrative feature that basically means the world is more immersive, and the player actions have meanings. These are simply the logic loopholes the characters have to jump through to help your immersion, but is also why I think this subset of the litrpg genre has more throughput with average reader. Considering that, that is the reason why at least in my experience, there was a considerable amount of world building before I began to enjoy the book, aside from the humor, and I consider the payoff definitely worth it.

I failed to gather from the synopsis and reviews that this appears to be targeted to young adult readers. Based on my hour and a half in I am not enthused to continue. The character is literally juvenile and his world view simplistic. I may or may not change this review since I want to get my money's worth. Hopefully more books in this category in the future have a young adult or teen category on their page so people may better know what they're getting into.

Only gets better

Zogarth has really come into his own. From the first book, the MC being insufferably contradictory in his morals and most characters being 2 dimensional, to the second and third book as the MC becomes more fleshed out and unworried about becoming a hero, but on a quest for power.

if you've read book 2 you know how the story could've gone in a wild variety of directions for this book, but it felt like a seamless transition.

Experience Jake's thirst for power as you vicariously level up through him, a litrpg for those who want to experience the grinding and dungeon crawling, and not too many distractions.

It's just a game bro

No suspension of disbelief. Hey these characters started out in the modern world but have been transported to metaverse that is exactly like an rpg mmkay? It's meant to be experienced like that, instead of taking the story seriously you get to enjoy it as if you're leveling and powering up yourself.

It was alot of fun and the narrator did a great job on the different voices.
