Saachi does a fantastic job presenting multiple angles of the weight loss industry, featuring glp1s extensively. I learned quite a bit, and appreciated all of the different perspectives. I wish there had been more discussion about the industry of dieting, bmi, and fatphobia, but I also like the way they were incorporated. I’ll be exploring some of the books mentioned throughout. Thanks for the insight!

I struggled with the uneven narration - male narrator was so much stronger, and more natural. I had a hard time suspending disbelief for certain things. BB is super talented, this just didn’t do it for me.

The narration was fascinating. The narrator herself clearly has talent and depth, and is great with accents. I did find the jumps between accents somewhat distracting, but I also thoroughly enjoyed both her natural and character voices. I love the story, and would be interested in an extended version.

Perhaps my expectations were too great for this story, I honestly don't know. The concept was compelling, and the narrator did a fine enough job, but it just felt like there was something missing from the story. I will agree with other reviewers who said that the present tense was a bit much, but I did appreciate the non-linear story-telling - even if it didn't amount to as much as I'd hoped by the end. The reveal towards the end was... interesting... though it did feel somehow forced, and the plot hole(s) it created really left me wanting more in terms of resolution.

My only complaints for the narrator surround how she treated masculine voices. She lends a sort of creeper-vibe to every man she voices, but her feminine voices and the voices she used for the children were near perfect, particularly when conveying the desperation of said characters. Every time she said, "mommy?" or any of the children's lines, it was thoroughly believable. I suppose I wish the author had explored more with the children (this may have satisfied my "more" desire, in general), and with the novel's overall resolution, though I suppose it could have been purposefully left out for a sequel, or something.

Finally, I wouldn't classify this as horror, which is how I've seen the book categorized on various sites. Stressful in parts, yes, and it's undeniable that there are horrific scenes, but horror still feels like a stretch.

I am Richard Trent.

The premise of this story had promise, and the narrator was awesome - his voice and accents gave such color to the story. The narrative, itself, however... Meh. The entire "I am Richard Trent/you are Richard Trent" sequence was so off-putting that I almost gave up. I powered through to the end, which was somehow rushed in relation to the rest of the story.

The first half of the book, with its just-non-linear-enough-to-confuse style, was boring, and unimpressive. There wasn't enough action, suspense or real sense of fear for this to qualify as horror, which was the ultimate letdown about this book. I do wonder if a physical copy of the book could have swayed me, as the writing style used has been deemed rather polarizing. It was a nice change of perspective since second person isn't used as often as first or third, but that's probably the best selling point the writing offers.

Is it worth a listen? Eh. The narrator is totally worth a listen, but the book isn't offering anything to fans of the genre, fans of the source material, or those that enjoy something even slightly darker in tone. Perhaps Kea's next effort will bring something more original to the table.
