I liked this book just fine. I'm on a bit of a fantasy binge and got the audio version for listening at work. The story treads well-traveled paths with some interesting tweaks along the way. I liked the elements of sorcery, enchantments, and the gray line between sanctioned and unsanctioned magic as overseen by the Catholic Church. Even the Abbot is a sorcerer, using holy magic to fight back the darkness. The heroine, Fiametta is intelligent and outspoken. Thur, the romantic hero, is brave and handsome, willing to do what he can with what he has to avenge his brother. Of course, Fiametta and Thur are thrown together for a sweet romantic plot.

There are enough references to Italy that the setting and political machinations feel very real. The characters are wonderful. Even the villains have their moments of doubt, betrayal, and triumph. Every major character grows, learns, and changes as they play out their quest to free their city and save the souls of the people they love.

I'm familiar with the story from the games, and more recently from watching the TV series. It was fun to listen to the stories as originally written, and compare them to the adaptations that already exist. The narrator was wonderful and added so much to the atmosphere of the stories. It's a good introduction to the Witcher world, and makes me want to pick up the rest of the Witcher novels.

The book is a short and cozy murder mystery, narrated by a jealous wife who constantly compares herself to the teenager her husband once loved. That got old, fast, and it never let up. Let it go already, honey.

The twist at the end was surprising. Overall, It was okay but not great.

I grabbed this because it was free, and I admire Marie Curie. While the story is historical--events that really happened--It focused like a Tabloid on the scandal that drove her out of France. Her acceptance of her second Nobel prize and confronting the people who told her not to come was mentioned, but it was brushed aside like it was no big deal. I'm also flummoxed as to why the actress is portraying her with what sounds like a French accent. Ms. Curie was Polish. Overall, it was disappointing.

I highly recommend this title for people who like cats, warbots, and a badass outlaw biker woman who likes to blows sh*t up. There's so much to like here--a slow reveal of just who our heroine, Shining Smith, really is, and what she can do. Mateo the warbot has his own surprises, too. I enjoyed the characters, the complications and the secrets that Shining is so desperate to keep. There's mystery, intrigue, LOTS of explosions, tense battles, and lots of nasty surprises.

And the cats. I love the cats. That's all.

I'm absolutely going to grab the next book--It's a blast, and I want to spend more time in this world.

I'm the Original Star Wars Generation. Saw the first movie when I was a kid. Still have all my action figures from the 70's and devoured all of Alan Dean Foster's novelizations up and kept reading. Yes, I get salty about those old books not being canon anymore. (Get off my lawn.) I have also enjoyed Chuck Wendig's work and thought I'd start my "new canon" novels with this series. AFTERMATH was a good, entertaining book to listen to. In my rating system, 5 stars means "immediately nominate this for an award" so a four-star rating is still dam-good.

The core story of Imperials trying to regroup and the Republic trying to build a coalition makes perfect sense for the timeline. We get to follow scrap dealers, war-scarred heroes, gangsters, bounty hunters and free agents just in it for themselves through a city on a planet on the notorious outer rim. What happens on the planet Akiva will not stay on Akiva. Bad shit happens, good stuff happens. To be as non-spoilery as possible, there are a lot of close shaves in the story and I feel like some were so preposterous they were unbelievable.

I didn't like the interludes. They didn't do much for me, and I found them distracting. Are these teasers for another series that's set in the same timeline, included with the intention of marketing other books? Or maybe laying the seeds of the next two novels? I dunno, but they bothered me.

Narration and production values are top-notch.

Great story, bad audio editing

I listened to this audiobook in one go today, Completely entranced by the characters and the story. The plot is simple, but there are so many layers to the conflicts, family dynamics, honor, duty, and leadership that it's easy to get drawn in and emotionally enmeshed. It's great stuff and exactly what I expect from Fran Wilde.

The problem was the poor audio editing. As in, none at all. The narrator was the perfect voice for the book, but none of her second takes were edited out. She would read a line, then a pause, then the same line with different intonation. This was happening with increasing frequency so much so that there were several instances with two flubbed lines in a row. THIS IS NOT THE NARRATOR'S FAULT. Apparently the publisher didn't want to spend money on getting it edited by a halfway competent audio engineer. Do better.
