Author of the beloved classic The Thorn Birds, Colleen McCullough creates sweeping sagas that are unparalleled in their drama and emotional grandeur. Now she carries listeners into the pageantry and passion, politics and intrigue of ancient Rome. Ye Gods
Revisado: 02-06-08
With all the good reviews I had high hopes. Ye gods, this book was boring. You really would have to be in to Roman politics to put up with the way it drags. Reminded me of junior high school when they had these films, trying to make history interesting with some very poor play acting...You Were There...ugh...barf. I found the author's need to address a wide range of unimportant characters in their full Roman name, each person with 3 or 4 names, sometimes 5, each with 3 or 4 syllables, all ending in us. Did you know Romans' favorite exclamation is Ye Gods? With the reader's Brittish accent, Rome was surely part of the UK, and everyone sounds like they are gay, well maybe some were, but if you are gay, don't get your hopes up. The book is juicy for about 5 minutes, and then goes straight for the next agonizing 40 hours. Ye Gods, this book was boring. I know, I already said that. Didn't like it? Just listen to the book.

Historia
The Pillars of the Earth tells the story of Philip, prior of Kingsbridge, a devout and resourceful monk driven to build the greatest Gothic cathedral the world has known...of Tom, the mason who becomes his architect - a man divided in his soul...of the beautiful, elusive Lady Aliena, haunted by a secret shame...and of a struggle between good and evil that will turn church against state, and brother against brother.

Take a chance
Revisado: 11-05-07
I took a chance on this book. I almost let the dry sounding title, and the thing about the cathedral scare me off. This is a very entertaining book, and well narrated. It's less about monks and cathedrals, and more about the things people do, and the things that drive them. This is different than the usual Ken Follett, but then this is better than his rest. I am glad there is a sequel and am looking forward to it. I guess some authors can tell a good story regardless of subject. Enlightenment or edification, maybe not, good listen, yes.

Warning Warning Warning

Book 3 ends like you are at the end of a chapter. When I came to the end I didn't realize it was the end of the book. I thought I listened to the downloads in the wrong order. When I read the reviews about the books dragging on and not knowing what's happening for years, I thought the reviewers were just being a little critical. Now I wish they were more critical, like, hey dude, the author is going to cut you off like in a soap opera episode. I thought book one, started off slow, reading like a history of some lost civilization. Books 2 and 3 are much better and worth the listen...until the author drops you. Now, I will wait until all 8 books are out in three years before picking up this story again. It seems authors have discovered a fine living writing 10 book sagas. At least some authors throw you a bone by providing a little closure a the end of each book.

Historia
Neal Stephenson is a blazing new force on the sci-fi scene. With the groundbreaking cyberpunk novel Snow Crash, he has "vaulted onto the literary stage." It weaves virtual reality, Sumerian myth, and just about everything in between with a cool, hip cybersensibility - in short, it is the gigathriller of the information age.

Revisado: 12-16-05
This book was boring and unimaginative. If you took a lot of bad movies like, Escape From LA, Water World, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and mixed them up you might get a flavor for what this book is like. But, wait, let's throw in the mafia, pizza delivered by skate boarders, motorcylce riding ninjas, and the tower of Babel from the Old Testament. Did I forget to mention surfers, and every Pacific Rim culture, oh yeah, and Russians, Stinger missles and AK-47's It takes place in the future, but all the technology is old, or pure fantasy. Actually, Mutant Ninja Turtles has a better plot. I know this sounds too critical, but don't say I didn't warn you.
