Historia
Twenty thousand years ago, women were making and wearing the first clothing created from spun fibers. In fact, right up to the Industrial Revolution the fiber arts were an enormous economic force, belonging primarily to women. Despite the great toil required in making cloth and clothing, most books on ancient history and economics have no information on them. Much of this gap results from the extreme perishability of what women produced, but it seems clear that until now descriptions of prehistoric and early historic cultures have omitted virtually half the picture.

Fascinating information!

I was concerned that the age of this book (nearly 30 years) would lead to some obviously outdated information, but other than some mild language, nothing really popped out. Very enjoyable!

Historia
Andrew Roberts' Napoleon is the first one-volume biography to take advantage of the recent publication of Napoleon's thirty-three thousand letters, which radically transform our understanding of his character and motivation. At last we see him as he was: protean multitasker, decisive, surprisingly willing to forgive his enemies and his errant wife Josephine.

I didn't learn much about Napoleon in school, and this was a fascinating and thorough way to educate myself. the author clearly loves the subject matter, and gives incredible historical detail from first hand accounts.

Award-winning scholar Toby Wilkinson captures not only the lavish pomp and artistic grandeur of this land of pyramids and pharaohs but for the first time reveals the constant propaganda and repression that were its foundations.

Revisado: 10-13-22
I would completely recommend this book to anyone interested in ancient Egypt! The narrator did a wonderful job putting together a very long history without becoming a droning parade of facts. It kept me interested throughout! The next time I go to a museum I will have a much better understanding of the greater context of the Egyptian artefacts within.

Eastern Europe has long been thought of as the "Other Europe", a region rife with political upheaval, shifting national borders, an astonishing variety of ethnic diversity, and relative isolation from the centers of power in the West. It has also been, and continues to be, pivotal in the course of world events. A History of Eastern Europe offers a sweeping 1,000-year tour with a particular focus on the region's modern history.

I had a blind spot in my knowledge for Eastern European history and this was so helpful. I loved the explanations of individual stories alongside the greater political movements. A great listen! I would absolutely recommend it!

Historia
For most of its 5,000-year existence, China has been the largest, most populous, wealthiest, and mightiest nation on Earth. And for us as Westerners, it is essential to understand where China has been in order to anticipate its future. These 36 eye-opening lectures deliver a comprehensive political and historical overview of one of the most fascinating and complex countries in world history. You'll learn about the powerful dynasties that ruled China for centuries; the philosophical and religious foundations-particularly Confucianism, Daoism, and Buddhism-that have influenced every iteration of Chinese thought, and the larger-than-life personalities, from both inside and outside its borders, of those who have shaped China's history. As you listen to these lectures, you'll see how China's politics, economics, and art reflect the forces of its past. From the "Mandate of Heaven," a theory of social contract in place by 1500 B.C.E., 3,000 years before Western philosophers such as Thomas Hobbes and John Locke, to the development of agriculture and writing independent of outside influence to the technologically-advanced Han Dynasty during the time of the Roman Empire, this course takes you on a journey across ground that has been largely unexplored in the history courses most of us in the West have taken. In guiding you through the five millennia of China's history, Professor Hammond tells a fascinating story with an immense scope, a welcome reminder that China is no stranger to that stage and, indeed, has more often than not been the most extraordinary player on it.

Uhh and Umm
Revisado: 10-13-22
Do not bother with this course. I've never returned a Great Courses course before and I'm getting my credit back on this one.
The professor presented Chinese history as a series of droning facts about the elite, with hardly any wider context for why things were happening, the common people, or the relevant activities of China's neighboring countries. As others have said, he would have benefitted from a script, as "Uhh"and "Umm" take up about a tenth of his speech. This is probably the worst narration I have heard in any Audible book.
I had to give up on the book in the 1800s, when the professor managed to make the Opium War boring. I'm going to go look for a better book on this subject.

I guess everything is a secret society?
Revisado: 05-02-21
It really jumped around a lot. The argument for the book was that secret societies have a lot of definitions, so everything can be a secret society. That's fine, but if all of Western history is secret societies, then this book is really just a sped up overview of all of Western history with spooky questions occasionally thrown in, which I feel is far too broad for one book. I suppose it just wasn't what I wanted.

Historia
Tamsyn Muir’s Gideon the Ninth unveils a solar system of swordplay, cut-throat politics, and lesbian necromancers. Her characters leap out of the audio, as skillfully animated as arcane revenants. The result is a heart-pounding epic science fantasy. Brought up by unfriendly, ossifying nuns, ancient retainers, and countless skeletons, Gideon is ready to abandon a life of servitude and an afterlife as a reanimated corpse.

Great voice, boring and underwhelming story
Revisado: 05-02-21
I'm used to YA books spending the first fifth of the book explaining why the protagonist's life is bad, but got a third of the way in to this one and could barely discern a plot or any character motivation for Gideon. Sassy quips and "I like swords" isn't enough personality for me. My friends that liked it mostly think the main character is super hot, so I guess that's enough to keep them interested.

Historia
For the past few hundred years, most of what we’ve been taught about the native cultures of North America came from reports authored by the conquerors and colonizers who destroyed them. Now - with the technological advances of modern archaeology and a new perspective on world history - we are finally able to piece together their compelling true stories. In Ancient Civilizations of North America, Professor Edwin Barnhart, Director of the Maya Exploration Center, will open your eyes to a fascinating world you never knew existed - even though you’ve been living right next to it, or even on top of it.

Awesome and exactly what I wanted!
Revisado: 01-05-21
This was awesome! It's obviously a deeply rooted and fascinating subject, but it was incredibly cool to hear about Native American history before European contact. I am exhausted by histories of exclusively indigenous suffering, and it's a joy to hear a history of their triumphs and incredible achievements. I am even more excited to see the completed Native American section of Chicago's Field Museum after learning so much about the civilizations in this book.

Very Little Story, Mostly Advertising Batuu
Revisado: 09-24-19
I was excited to read this because I enjoyed the Phasma book so much, but the story of this one was very lacking. I also knew it would be very promotional of the new Galaxy's Edge area of Hollywood Studios, but it only added a little to the lore/worldbuilding of that area. It didn't contain anything you wouldn't hear in the banter with the cast members there. An interesting book for tying in so precisely to the theme park, but not very entertaining. I hoped for more about the history or deeper culture of Batuu while enjoying an exciting story, but it was pretty bland. I probably would have liked it more if I were a kid, but there's a weirdly large amount of torture for it to be a book for tweens.

Historia
Southern food is integral to the American culinary tradition, yet the question of who "owns" it is one of the most provocative touchpoints in our ongoing struggles over race. In this unique memoir, culinary historian Michael W. Twitty takes listeners to the white-hot center of this fight, tracing the roots of his own family and the charged politics surrounding the origins of soul food, barbecue, and all Southern cuisine.

70% Feelings, 30% History
Revisado: 06-21-18
I was looking for a book on the history of black American southern cooking. I was expecting discomfort because of the horrible history of slavery, but it's actually a book about a 21st century guy learning about the history, saying a snippet of it, and then taking 70% of the book to poetically explain how this makes him feel about his place in the narrative. While I respect everyone's right to discover themselves, that isn't exactly a history or documentary about food history. I didn't come here for subjective feelings about how much the author feels obligated to like or not like chitterlings. If someone is interested in a more emotional review of this with a bit of history sprinkled in, then you'll love it, but I couldn't get past chapter three.
