When retired math teacher Grace Winters is left a run-down house on a Mediterranean island by a long-lost friend, curiosity gets the better of her. She arrives in Ibiza with a one-way ticket, no guidebook and no plan. Among the rugged hills and golden beaches of the island, Grace searches for answers about her friend’s life, and how it ended. What she uncovers is stranger than she could have dreamed. But to dive into this impossible truth, Grace must first come to terms with her past.

Couldn’t finish
Revisado: 11-20-24
I could not finish it. I bailed with three hours left to go. The premise was dumb. The book was preachy and the central character was awful. It was like being stuck on a plane to China with a really irritating seat mate. The plot goes something like this: a 72 year old widow is left a cottage in Ibiza by someone she hasn’t seen in 40 years. So she moves there and discovers aliens under the sea who imbue her with a new self awareness and appreciation for her life. Yeah. Really I’m not kidding . That’s what it’s about . Along for the ride on this geriatric rom com is an old sexy Spanish physicist who was drummed out of his job teaching at a university because he tried to tell everyone about said aliens and they thought he was nuts. The author is trying to go for Hepburn and bogey in the African queen. She’s really uptight and prissy. He’s a wild man they spar. She finds out he has cancer. Guess the rest . I pretty much did which is why I don’t need to waste anymore time.

Historia
Set in a not-too-distant America, I Cheerfully Refuse is the tale of a bereaved and pursued musician embarking under sail on a sentient Lake Superior in search of his departed, deeply beloved, bookselling wife. Rainy, an endearing bear of an Orphean narrator, seeks refuge in the harbors, fogs, and remote islands of the inland sea. Encountering lunatic storms and rising corpses from the warming depths, Rainy finds on land an increasingly desperate and illiterate people, a malignant billionaire ruling class, crumbled infrastructure, and a lawless society.

Great epic sweet story
Revisado: 06-22-24
An apocalyptic journey told from the perspective of a gentle and kind Everyman. Has elements of cormac McCarthy and the Iliad and maybe a little mad max. Loved it

Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

Sam and Sadie—two college friends, often in love, but never lovers—become creative partners in a dazzling and intricately imagined world of video game design, where success brings them fame, joy, tragedy, duplicity, and, ultimately, a kind of immortality. It is a love story, but not one you have heard before.

I read this book because my son is a game designer at Activision And honestly I don’t think I ever really understood what he did before. This was just about the best tutorial I could’ve ever had and it was a story brimming with unique characters and a compelling story. I loved it

An interesting book about an uninteresting subject
Revisado: 01-07-16
Very well written and well researched biography. Unfortunately, the subject is a very uninteresting and uncompelling fellow, who really didn't merit an entire book devoted to him.

Historia
The instant New York Times best seller. In the summer of 1989, a Baton Rouge neighborhood best known for cookouts on sweltering summer afternoons, cauldrons of spicy crawfish, and passionate football fandom, is rocked by a violent crime when 15-year-old Lindy Simpson - free spirit, track star, and belle of the block - is attacked late one evening near her home. As the dark side of this idyllic stretch of Southern suburbia is revealed, the close-knit neighborhood is irreversibly transformed.

Unbelievably compelling debut novel. Read it with my book club and we were all blown away and ended up having a great meeting. My only criticism, and it is small, is that the narrator should have had a southern accent.

Great Book, Annoying Reader
Revisado: 01-09-12
I listened to this with my 3 kids, ages 14, 13 and 11. The oldest had already read the book but was eager to listen to it with us. We had a very long drive from New York to Lake Placid and back, and the time just flew! The story had us all enthralled. The reader, however, was a big distraction. My 11 year old daughter took special exception to the way the narrator imitated a 12 year olds'
voice, making her sound like a 4 year old. My older boy, the one who had already read the book, would throw up his hands whenever she voiced the part of the central character, Katness. According to him, Katness is supposed to be a very tough, cool girl and the narrator made her sound like a girly dope. Having said that, the story itself is so strong that it was usually possible for me to get past the annoying quirks of the reader and stay enthralled.
