Historia
When twenty-two-year-old Jennifer Worth, from a comfortable middle-class upbringing, went to work as a midwife in the direst section of postwar London, she not only delivered hundreds of babies and touched many lives, she also became the neighborhood';s most vivid chronicler. Woven into the ongoing tales of her life in the East End are the true stories of the people Worth met who grew up in the dreaded workhouse, a Dickensian institution that limped on into the middle of the twentieth century.

Full of Heart and Sorrow
Revisado: 04-11-25
I have watched the PBS series for years and I love the early seasons as they related to the actual stories of Jennifer Worth and several of those are included in this book. The book captures the horror and sorrow of the workhouse that I had never understood. I love that the take away is about love and the importance of knowing how to love. It's a beautiful book that made me cry. I would recommend.

Fun Period Piece Mystery
Revisado: 04-11-25
I really enjoyed this tale. I love the narrator, Steven Boyer he is one of my favorites. It's a good detective murder mystery, although it does involve the investigation of dead children. I like the author and will look at other pieces of her work and will read the sequel in this series. I would recommend.

Historia
In this delightfully chilling collection, the iconic Jeanette Winterson turns her fearless gaze to the realm of ghosts, interspersing her own encounters with the supernatural alongside hair-raising fictions. Lifting the veil between the living and the dead, Winterson spirits us away to a haunted estate that ensnares a nomadic young couple in its own dark past, a staged immersive ghost tour gone awry, a West Village seance that threatens the bounds between AI and reality, and a vacation home in the metaverse where a widow visits an improved version of her deceased husband.

Not for me
Revisado: 04-11-25
I love short story collections and I love ghost stories so I was hoping this was going to be a fun ride.
It was pretty slow. Narrator's where fine. Introduction was looong and boring and went on forever. None of the stories spooked me or stayed with me, which I feel is what a good ghost story should do. Would not recommend, would only read if at a cabin and it was the only book around to read.

It crept in...
Revisado: 04-11-25
At first I didn't like this story. It was slow moving and I wasn't sure where it was going. I ended up really liking the lead boy in the story. Visually very descriptive I could see this as a film. I think this would make a very good horror movie. It's absurd, but then it gets under your skin and if you go along for the ride I think you will enjoy.

I enjoyed, I will at some point listen to the second story in the series. Teenagers vs monsters vs serial killer. This was a new author for me and I like him. Matt Godfrey is one of my favorite narrators, I found this book when I was looking for other works he narrated.

I fell for the hype
Revisado: 10-28-24
I was so disappointed, I had read so many great things about this story and author. The lack of any true human emotion prevented me from being able to engage in this story. Ex-wife is dead... oh well. The way the father and daughter reach to this is completely unbelievable. The lack of actual grief and loss make everything else feel fake and hollow. I hated the main character, Joe. Not because he's a villain I'm actually fond of villain's and a good story absolutely needs one. The story is told from his perspective and he is completely ridiculous and unbelievable. His sex scene, gross. Also unbelievable that anyone would want on top of the kitchen table frantic sex with him let alone a smart woman. I was routing for the intercept the entire story. This story has been compared to Stephen Kings The Institute. Only that there is a company that conducts telepathic experiments on subjects. This story lacked a soul, it's like comparing a mannequin to a human. I would not recommend.

Failure will result in death or a fate perhaps worse: being put to sea and made an Other himself.

Revisado: 07-16-24
I loved this story! It's a haunting and beautiful coming of age story. In a dystopian world there is love and hope but also wind and cold and dark water. It's a story that has stuck in my head, like a memory. Would make a wonder film. Narrator was perfect. Highly recommend.

“You like it darker? Fine, so do I,” writes Stephen King in the afterword to this magnificent new collection of twelve stories that delve into the darker part of life—both metaphorical and literal. King has, for half a century, been a master of the form, and these stories, about fate, mortality, luck, and the folds in reality where anything can happen, are as rich and riveting as his novels, both weighty in theme and a huge pleasure to digest.
