Historia
Jon Ward's life is divided in half: two decades inside the evangelical Christian bubble and two decades outside of it. In Testimony, Ward tells the engaging story of his upbringing in, and eventual break from, an influential evangelical church in the 1980s and 1990s. Ward sheds light on the evangelical movement's troubling political and cultural dimensions, tracing the ways in which the Jesus People movement was seduced by materialism and other factors to become politically captive rather than prophetic.

Read it for the SGM commentary...

...Stayed for the thoughtful critique of western evangelicalism and Trumpism. Just a few years younger than the author, I grew up in the same era of sovereign grace churches and experienced spiritual abuse as a woman in that context that I'm still recovering from. It is validating and healing to hear other's stories, and in turn, part of my story told. I appreciated how he wove together his personal story with the larger narrative occurring historically and politically. Great read!

Historia
In spite of the hyper-connected culture we live in today, women still feel shamed for oversharing and being publicly vulnerable. And no matter how many friends we seem to have, many of us are still desperately lonely. Laura Tremaine, blogger and podcaster behind 10 Things to Tell You, says it's time for something better. Openness and vulnerability are the foundation for human growth and healthy relationships, and it all starts when we share our stuff, the nitty-gritty daily details about ourselves with others.

Basically a memoir...
Revisado: 05-16-21
I had heard such great things about this book, I was excited to read it. I thought it would be more of the self-help genre, giving tips on how to show up more vulnerably and authentically in relationships. However, it was basically the author telling her life story. While some of the stories are poignant, overall it's a pretty basic memoir of someone who just likes to talk about themself a lot. There was really no relationship advice or tips on how to build friendships. Just some examples of questions you could ask a friend, and then a very long-winded answers from the author talking about herself. This might have been interesting, had the author more intriguing stories to share, but most of it is mundane. Reminded me of being stuck in my front year with a neighbor who accosted me and wants to tell me her life story. Hearing someone you don't know talk and talk about themself and wondering when you're going to the part that's relevant to you.

Historia
Too often, political questions are framed in impossible ways for the faithful Christian: We're forced to choose between social justice and biblical values, between supporting women and opposing abortion. As a result, it's easy for Christians to grow disillusioned with civic engagement or fall back into tribal extremes. This state of affairs has damaged Christian public witness and divided the church. The authors of this book represent the AND Campaign, which exists to educate and organize Christians for faithful civic and cultural engagement.

Good, but...

Narrator is difficult to listen to. Struggled to finish for that reason. The info is good, and book is well written.
