This third installment of the Mythos series sits in a perfect spot between bedtime story and History Channel program. I hope many more (perhaps even exploring other cultures' myths) are forthcoming.

If you like super-detailed crunchy sci-fi, then you'll love the first story of how humanity has to flee earth's destruction and learn how to survive and establish permanent habitats in orbit. The detail is tremendous. The weight of the info-dumps really bogs down the flow of the story in places though, so it can get a bit tedious. The second story is set five thousand years later when earth has become habitable and the genetically modified children of the original spacefarers return and find a mystery to be unraveled. This bit feels much more story and character driven and doesn't rely on labored descriptions of the inner workings of the fictional future tech (which is only marginally different than the technology of today). Overall the book feels like an extremely detailed backstory, the likes of which would work great as source material for a role-playing game. But by the same token, it feels like the real story this setting deserves hasn't even begun. The voice performances are good, but when I saw there were a male and female credited, I expected they'd be working together, voicing characters of their gender. But sadly it was the first story entirely voiced by the female (with awful sounding male character imitations), and the second voiced by the male (with equally bad female imitations). What a missed opportunity.

The classic Sherlock Holmes tales have never been better! Stephen Fry brings to bear a vocal talent that has few peers. He is able to breathe life into seemingly endless distinct characters with his mastery of accents and inflection. One can easily close one's eyes and visualize the scene and characters as if watching a theater production or movie. If you have never read Sherlock Holmes, or found it a bit dry upon the attempt, I would urge you to give this version a try. The narrator's love for the characters shines through and makes for a great experience for the listener. If I could give it six stars I would!

I loved the variety of performers! You can never get bored with a single narrator when each short story brings on a new one! I have seen many adaptations of HP Lovecraft source material (Re-Animator, From Beyond, Dagon, and even the venerable Dunwich Horror) and its very interesting to see the changes that were made from the original stories (that are roughly a century old at this point). Of course the age of the stories adds a bit of a complication for modern audiences. Let me address the elephant in the room. The N word. In one of the stories (Rats in the Walls) the protagonist has a cat named "N****r man". I am glad they left the text unaltered, because as a snapshot of a particular time it gives one a unvarnished view of the era in which the piece was written. Its a piece of history. It is what it is. Also kudos to the narrator of that story who when reading the name chose to not place emphasis on the first or last part of the name, but simply said it evenly as if one were saying Superman or Spider-man. It made it sound more ludicrous than offensive (which is probably the best you're going to do with that particular turn of phrase). And though there was nothing too scary by the standards of modern horror, it was still fascinating to see the roots of many modern horror tropes expressed in these tales.

I think Ray Porter is my favorite narrator at this point, and Jack Carr is my favorite author. Can't wait for the next one!

The voice performance was decent. There. I said something nice. The story, however, is like a lurid gross fanfic. If I could give it no stars I would. The highlights include: gratuitous disgusting descriptions of sexual activity, gratuitous disgusting descriptions of grotesque characters and their equally grotesque anatomy, and to top it all off a detailed description of Buckaroo being raped by a corpulent bug alien who we are told is Empress John Emdall from the original movie. This was a nasty waste of time. Either the author utterly loathes the fans (that are the only conceivable audience for this work), or has completely lost whatever spark of creativity that made the movie a cult classic. Steer clear of this.

The world of Logan's Run is a dystopia built by revolutionary children and AI. In the "little war" the old system built and run by old people was overthrown by the young. Their simple solution to the overpopulation of the planet was to kill everyone over the age of twenty-one and let "the thinker" (a massive AI complex) run the world. In the AI-governed aftermath it became customary for every citizen to live a life of hedonistic pleasure, and end that life on their twenty-first birthday. Sleep shops offer easy drug-induced suicide, and if you fail to report to one, Sandmen will be sent to assist you in ending your life. Logan was a lifelong Sandman. A professional murderer. He had ended the lives of many runners whose time had run out. But now it was his lastday, and he wasn't ready to die. There would be no time to think. Only time to run.

For some reason, the Logan's Run series so far feels like someone is recounting the plot of a 1980's era Gamma World campaign. And I'm 100% on board with it. No it doesn't make total sense and there are plenty of "WTF?" moments but overall it's a good listen!
