Historia
On the wild, lonely coast of Western Australia, two thrill-seeking teenage boys fall under the spell of a veteran big-wave surfer named Sando. Their mentor urges them into a regiment of danger and challenge, and the boys test themselves and each other on storm swells and over shark-haunted reefs. The boys give no thought to what they could lose, or to the demons that drive their mentor on into ever-greater danger. Venturing beyond all caution—in sports, relationships, and sex—each character approaches a point from which none of them will return undamaged.

Superb!

Well, Tim Winton can do no wrong. The narrator absolutely nails the voice of the Aussie bloke.

My favourite childhood book brought to life!
Revisado: 11-02-18
Loved everything about this performance - I’m not sure you would call this a book as such. More like a radio performance. Nevertheless, it’s very well done. As an ornithologist, I particularly appreciated the correct use of bird species from India!

Narration doesn’t quite fit
Revisado: 10-20-18
Good story but not engrossing. I had trouble with the narrator - he sounds too old and stuffy for the character.

Everything I never really wanted to know about edible mushrooms
Revisado: 06-05-18
I thought this book would provide me some insights into the fungus phylum but it’s really all about food and people - the name dropping is painful. If you’re interested in biology rather than food and people, don’t bother...

Historia
For millennia, lions, tigers, and their man-eating kin have kept our dark, scary forests dark and scary, and their predatory majesty has been the stuff of folklore. But by the year 2150 big predators may only exist on the other side of glass barriers and chain-link fences. Their gradual disappearance is changing the very nature of our existence. We no longer occupy an intermediate position on the food chain; instead we survey it invulnerably from above - so far above that we are in danger of forgetting that we even belong to an ecosystem.

Great book, shame about the performance
Revisado: 05-23-18
Hated the narration - it made me feel like I was watching some old doco from the 1950s! With that sort of old fashioned, deep masculine, supposedly authoritative tone. No nuance given to a very nuanced piece of work. Too bad Quammen couldn’t have narrated this excellent book...

Unforgettable
Revisado: 04-26-18
Winton’s prose is so evocative of time and place. I love the Australian-ness of the whole story! And Hosking’s narration is absolutely spot on (although Westralians might be a little put out but his pronunciation of Fremantle and other place names). His voices are perfect, though. One of my favourite books of the year so far.
