Kim Gordon, founding member of Sonic Youth, fashion icon, and role model for a generation of women, now tells her story - a memoir of life as an artist, of music, marriage, motherhood, independence, and as one of the first women of rock and roll, written with the lyricism and haunting beauty of Patti Smith's Just Kids.

Really good, but thought I'd love this more
Revisado: 03-13-15
I grew up in the 90's and my life revolved around the alternative music scene. Needless to say, I was excited when I heard Kim was writing this "tell all" and was anxiously awaiting its release.
Perhaps I overhyped it too much in my mind; I expected it to be more about her relationships with the bands of the era, however a large portion of the book is about her childhood, which isn't that fascinating at all.
Kim does share some interesting anecdotes around Kurt Cobain, Courtney Love, Billy Corgan and a few others of the 90's musical giants, and the last 30 or so minutes of the book goes into the dark side of her relationship with Thurston and his infidelity, however I feel much of this book exists as filler.
All that said, I did come out with a deeper appreciation of Kim Gordon and Sonic Youth and her sharing her story in her own words is quite enjoyable. If you grew up a fan of Sonic Youth or 90's alternative in general, you pretty much have to listen this book as Kim Gordon's impact on music and art is immense and her few have experienced as much as she.

Historia
Shane Dawson has always been an open book. From his first YouTube vlog back in 2008 to his feature film debut Not Cool to a cover story in Variety magazine, Shane has documented his life pre-tty thoroughly. We've seen awkward and adorable Q&As with his mom, weight-loss center drama, love life details, and the all-important haircut reveal. We've seen his hilarious spoofs of Miley Cyrus, Paris Hilton, and Sarah Palin. His music videos are awesome.

Never heard of Shane Dawson and still loved this!
Revisado: 03-13-15
I listened to this not knowing that Shane Dawson was/is a huge YouTube personality, and having no background on him at all made no impact on my enjoyment of his essays. They are witty, hilarious and completely relatable. His performance is highly enjoyable and he comes across very charismatic that I can see now why he's so loved by those that apparently follow him online.
He's self-deprecating, inspiring and seems like a guy you'd love to just hang out with, especially if you like to laugh so hard you spill Splenda-sweetened iced tea out of your nose.

Historia
There has never been a craze like Beanie Babies. The $5 beanbag animals with names like Seaweed the Otter and Gigi the Poodle drove millions of Americans into a greed-fueled frenzy as they chased the rarest Beanie Babies, whose values escalated weekly in the late 1990s. A single Beanie Baby sold for $10,000, and on eBay the animals comprised 10 percent of all sales.

Fascinating
Revisado: 03-13-15
As a 90's kid, I lived through peak Beanie Baby popularity although neither me nor my family ever got bit by the beanie bug. It's fascinating to see what it was like from both sides - the collectors that poured their life savings investing in plush and the corporation that was gaming the market by retiring beanies to increase demand.
This is an enjoyable listen from start to finish and really sheds lights on the "dark side of cute!"

Historia
In Dad is Fat, stand-up comedian Jim Gaffigan, who’s best known for his legendary riffs on Hot Pockets, bacon, manatees, and McDonald's, expresses all the joys and horrors of life with five young children - everything from cousins ("celebrities for little kids") to toddlers’ communication skills ("they always sound like they have traveled by horseback for hours to deliver important news"), to the eating habits of four-year-olds ("there is no difference between a four-year-old eating a taco and throwing a taco on the floor").

Revisado: 07-29-13
Would you try another book from Jim Gaffigan and/or Jim Gaffigan?
No.
What was most disappointing about Jim Gaffigan’s story?
The whole book was basically short story anecdotes and half-baked jokes about kids. Would translate much better as part of his stand-up act.
Which character – as performed by Jim Gaffigan – was your favorite?
N/A

Historia
Before Liz Lemon, before Weekend Update, before Sarah Palin, Tina Fey was just a young girl with a dream: A recurring stress dream that she was being chased through a local airport by her middle-school gym teacher. She also had a dream that one day she would be a comedian on TV. She has seen both these dreams come true. At last, Tina Fey's story can be told. From her youthful days as a vicious nerd to her tour of duty on Saturday Night Live. Tina Fey reveals all, and proves what we've always suspected: You're no one until someone calls you bossy.
