Overall, an enjoyable story. I liked the ending very much; and the book was much better than the movie.

Two minor things bothered me;
1) The authors seemed to struggle with the general intelligence of the killer, in one breath he/she/it is as dumb as a water buffalo, then the next cunning as a fox. And it seemed to be which ever was convenient for the current scene/trap/victim.
2) felt at times narrator would lose or mix up the character's voices, or they were sometimes just too indistinct.

Just know that the conclusion is very open ended, and you'll be wanting to immediately jump into the second book. So you might want to have it standing ready in your library, just in case!

Independence Day if written as a Technical Manual

Finding the enjoyable story entwined within this lengthy laser/mirror mining technical thesis is about as tedious as extracting maple syrup from a tree. Story has its moments, when it is not halting to a screeching stop to expand on just why the sky is blue and what makes crickets chirp. Parts of the book are left enjoyable to those few that would recite the melting point of Boron without using Google. Not could, but would; as in not only do they know this amount of trivia, but they then think it the perfect anecdote to share at parties.

I think a good editor could have whittled this into a four star book; as is, it is a marathon to push through.

This book was enjoyable, but if you let yourself start thinking too much on the details and circumstances then it devolves into a keystone kops of random failures... reminding much like playing the original Oregon Trail video game; where just because there was a LARGE list of various bad things that could happen to the original westward settlers, the entire list of bad things did not actually ALL happen to ONE caravan.

Same with this book, the subtitle should have been, if it can go wrong it will go wrong and at the worst possible moment for maximum effect. The main title could have been also changed to "The Castaway Goes to Mars". Again, this book was an enjoyable listen, but nothing more. And by the end of the book, it had turned into a Laurel and Hardy slapstick routine between Mark Watney and Mother Nature.

On a sidenote, I just cannot see how this will be successfully adapted into a movie... the best parts of this book were the techinical and analytical hurdles--along with the and the inner dialogue and exposition of the problems--that Mark Watney had to adapt and overcome; and a movie just won't allow for such insight and thus the movie will be void of the best parts of the book... the backbone, actually.

Orson Scott Cards writing is ALWAYS superb, even this novel was well written. But (and as Orson Scott Card discussed in the 'epilogue') he dove largely into explaining the science' part of this science-fiction novel. And he balanced it well, it's just that the bulk of it seemed to be very dogmatic at times exhibiting an inner-turmoil to walk right up to the line of blaspheme and then turn away--given the knowledge that Orson Scott Card is a member of Mormon Church-LDS. I know it is fiction, but it seemed SO DEVELOPED that at times it felt like I was reading one man's personal indoctrination manual for either Scientology 101 or post-Mormonism and done so from within the midst of drug-induced haze.

The other aspect was that some of the 'theology' seemed to parallel that which was referenced in the Ender's series--particularly 3rd and 4th books; sort of a re-gifting of an underlying ideal but simply a different setting and characters.

Personally, I always viewed the Mormon faith of the 1800's as simply a precursor for Scientology of the 1900's... this book eerily bridged that unintended gap. It was either that or it felt like the story should have been narrated by Cheech & Chong... like oh wow, man.
(maybe a little bit of both)

Narration was great as it was in the book before, again, the pacing and tempo between these two good narrators could be better blended to compliment as contrast.

And as in the first book, this book was only the second part to a three part novel.

But it only reads as the first part of a three part novel.

Narration was very good, only comment was that at times it seemed that the switching from Rudnicki to Emily was too stark of a difference. Like coming inside after a bright day in the snow. Rudnicki has such a deep velvet voice that has its established pace, then Emily would enter and have a to large of change in tempo. Alone, I enjoyed each narrator, and I enjoyed that each accounted for their specific side of the story. Just would have liked the double reading to be comparable to a duet in terms of pacing and tempo.

i enjoyed the writing style and the first half and a quarter of the book, but the ending plot fell flat and felt somewhat arbitrary, ie simply for the sake of ending the book. Like the author threw up his hands and said "well, that's all I have so far, let me just tie things up from left field real quick; as i have to turn it in tomorrow".
