Historia
In a world struggling back from the brink of apocalypse, life is harsh. But for Elspeth Gordie, born with enhanced mental abilities that would see her sterilised or burned if discovered, it is also dangerous. There is only survival by secrecy, and so she determines never to use her forbidden powers. I love this series almost as much as her Legendsong saga. If you haven’t read the Legendsong books Darksong & Darkfall) you must check them out. The Obernewtyn chronicles are really amazing, and Isobelle Carmody is just an all around great author.

Historia
Darkfall marks the beginning of a stunning trilogy from one of Australia's leading writers of fantasy. After the death of her parents and her beloved instructor, Wind, Glynn devotes herself to the care of her sick twin sister, feeling her own life to be unimportant. One night, during a midnight swim, she is swept across the Void to the troubled watery world of Keltor, through a portal created to summon the mythical Unraveller. What is the mysterious connection between Glynn's world and Keltor? And why does the man who rescued her from the waves bear an eerie resemblance to Wind?

I hope Isobelle Carmody writes the third book, I would love to know how this beautiful story ends. This is one of my favorite books ever, as is Darksong (book 2 in the series). I think this series is even more important nowadays than when it was written. If you love good fantasy with great world building and exceptional character development and a theme of kindness, I highly highly recommend this masterpiece! Cannot wait for book 3.

Enjoyable, but sorta confusing and frustrating.
Revisado: 06-05-24
Overall I’m glad I listened to it, but if I were pressed to recommend it… that’s a hard maybe. The characters are well fleshed out and the story is interesting. I found it hard to believe that the main character could be so willfully oblivious, and that everyone who should be helping her was instead either gossiping about her, or assuming the worst of her.

Historia
In retreat from a devastating loss and crushing injustice, Katie lives alone in a fortresslike stone house on Jacob’s Ladder island. Once a rising star in the art world, she finds refuge in her painting. The neighboring island of Ringrock houses a secret: a government research facility. And now two agents have arrived on Jacob’s Ladder in search of someone—or something—they refuse to identify. Although an air of menace hangs over these men, an infinitely greater threat has arrived, one so strange even the island animals are in a state of high alarm.

Mary Sue Prepper faces the forces of evil (again)
Revisado: 10-13-23
This is the third Dean Koontz books I’ve listened to that has a suspiciously over-prepared Mary Sue main character with a military connection, prepper tendencies, and lots of assault rifles. Invariably Koontz’s Mary Sue character is faced with the forces of evil- either political, supernatural, or otherwise (always well armed and cast as greedy) and triumphs. They are enjoyable to listen to, but so similar & repetitive in theme that I think this will be my last Koontz book.

Lacking authenticity.
Revisado: 09-08-19
I definitely agree with the Firefly comparison, and don't mean that in a flattering way (even though I loved Firefly). Kizzy feels like a literal ripoff of Kaylee Frye, and I'll admit it felt sort of insulting to be presented with this cut-rate version of the delightful misfit. This book feels like it was engineered to appeal to a specific demographic, but it's missing something. Originality.

Historia
Dorothea Brooke is an ardent idealist who represses her vivacity and intelligence for the cold, theological pedant Casaubon. One man understands her true nature: the artist Will Ladislaw. But how can love triumph against her sense of duty and Casaubon’s mean spirit? Meanwhile, in the little world of Middlemarch, the broader world is mirrored: the world of politics, social change, and reforms, as well as betrayal, greed, blackmail, ambition, and disappointment.

Lovely, complex story
Revisado: 06-20-19
The narrator speaks so slowly that my mind wandered away several times, and I decided to give this book another go after realizing that I respond better to faster reading. So I switched to 1.25x speed and it was much easier to become absorbed in the plot, which is wonderful. I’m pretty sure I’ll go through the rest of my life asking myself “What would Dorothea do?” when faced with tough decisions.

Get a thesaurus, Dean M Cole.
Revisado: 05-09-19
I mean, let's start with the over the top macho/sexist behavior of the main character. It's so old fashioned and just gross. Next let's go through the annoyingly repetitive dialogue. He says WAN, CHEWED OVER, YES MA'AM, and (spoiler) ROBOT OVERLORDS, etc. a zillion times. Then let's marvel at how the female character sounds alternately like a manic pixie dream girl and a 10th grade book report on physics, but never like a real person. My conclusion: the author needs a thesaurus, and hang out with actual women so he can learn how to write about them. That said, it's interesting in theory. I just wish it told better. I also strongly dislike the male narrator, he sounds like a cop.

I could not get into this book. It wasn’t interesting or well written. The main character is not believable or relatable. If the premise seems interesting to you, I recommend Lilith’s Brood by Octavia Butler.
