Charming and Funny
Revisado: 12-15-22
A brilliantly funny Christmas story by a master craftsman of short stories, John Cheever, read by the inimitable George Plimpton, who channels the text's wit and pathos with aplomb.

Historia
Nobody knew where it came from. Nobody knew why it came. When an eight-foot-tall man made of stone appears in the middle of a busy city center one July afternoon, two-bit (and antisocial) reporter Andy Pointer assumes it's just a publicity stunt. Indeed, so does everyone else...until the Stone Man begins to walk, heading silently through the wall of the nearest building, flattening it, and killing several people inside as a result.

An Unexpected Delight
Revisado: 07-27-21
It's rare that I choose to read - or listen to - a book not on my ever-expanding list of books to read. It's also rare for me to read science fiction unless it's by one of the greats like Asimov. But this simple title intrigued me, and I gave it a shot. The Stone Man is a thrilling listen. Elements of mystery and a chase to uncover the secret of the stone man propels this character-driven story to its ultimate and powerful conclusion. In reference to the author's afterword, I agree the oblique ending was the right one (think Invasion of the Body Snatchers - I don't think that reference gives anything away). But lo, and behold! there is a sequel. I'd write more but I'm about to download it and give that one a listen to as well.
