Historia
Librarian Martha Storm has always found it easier to connect with books than people—though not for lack of trying. She keeps careful lists of how to help others in her superhero-themed notebook. And yet, sometimes it feels like she’s invisible. All of that changes when a book of fairy tales arrives on her doorstep. Inside, Martha finds a dedication written by her best friend—her grandmother Zelda—who died under mysterious circumstances years ago. When Martha discovers a clue within the book that her grandmother may still be alive, she becomes determined to discover the truth.

Too much details
Revisado: 04-16-25
Most of this book is taken up with overdone description. You don’t need that much to get or enjoy the story; in fact it becomes very tedious. The male voices sound largely the same and a stuffy- made the males sound like they lacked intelligence.

Historia
On July 16, 1945, just weeks before the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki that brought about the surrender of Japan and the end of WWII, the US unleashed the world's first atomic bomb at the Trinity testing site located in the remote Tularosa Valley in New Mexico. In The First Atomic Bomb Janet Farrell Brodie explores the history of the Trinity test and those whose contributions have rarely been discussed—the men and women who constructed, served, and witnessed the first test—as well as the downwinders who suffered the consequences of radiation.

The narrator read this like a news story with odd inflections. I think I will go back and read this as narration was hard to follow. Very comprehensive in research, well organized.

Historia
Young Elizabeth Stuart was thrust into a life of wealth and splendor when her godmother, Queen Elizabeth I, died and her father, James I, ascended to the illustrious throne of England. At 16 she was married to a dashing German count far below her rank, with the understanding that James would help her husband achieve the crown of Bohemia. Her father's terrible betrayal of this promise would ruin "the Winter Queen", as Elizabeth would forever be known, imperil the lives of those she loved, and launch a war that would last for 30 years.

Piranesi lives in the House. Perhaps he always has. In his notebooks, day after day, he makes a clear and careful record of its wonders: the labyrinth of halls, the thousands upon thousands of statues, the tides that thunder up staircases, the clouds that move in slow procession through the upper halls. On Tuesdays and Fridays Piranesi sees his friend, the Other. At other times he brings tributes of food to the Dead. But mostly, he is alone.

Never want to hear the word “vestibule” again
Revisado: 02-27-23
If you want to hear about someone’s daily minutia for about the first half of the book, this one’s for you. I agree with all the low ratings- repetitive, annoying text and weak story. Love the narrator though- he could read tax form instructions and it would be easy listening.

What happened to the voices
Revisado: 11-30-22
I agree with those reviews that say the change in voices, especially Michael’s, greatly disappointed me. Why now? I actually skipped those novels
that were narrated by another narrator other than Thorpe, because it was so odd to hear the characters in radically different voices. I will try the next in the series to see if the producers and narrator came to their senses and went back to original voices. If not, I’m done with this series.

Like Masterpiece Theater for your ears
Revisado: 05-15-22
I loved reading this series, hoping for more. But this is so much fun to listen to thanks to the extremely talented narrator. He voices dozens of characters so well, that it’s like Masterpiece theater for your ears. He brings this series to life in a way that reading it on your own can’t. I’m looking forward to binge listening my way back through the series.

Historia
The fourth chronicle of Matthew Bartholomew continues the adventures of the 14th-century Cambridge physician when he is called to attend to two deaths from some poisoned wine. The opening of a new and very well-endowed college has created petty infighting amongst the academics as new appointments are made. The winter and spring have been appallingly wet, there is a fever outbreak amongst the poorer townspeople and the country is not yet fully recovered from the aftermath of the plague.

Series is so much more fun with narration
Revisado: 04-26-22
I hope the narrator’s compensation was in proportion the number of characters he voiced, because that is what makes this series so fun to listen to. Though the stories are good, it’s a bit dry to read ( hard to voice all characters in your head and understand the inflections implied). The narrator is extremely talented and makes this series so enjoyable just to hear the different characters- even when they’re eating or laughing, etc- makes the story come alive.

Historia
Eight-year-old orphan Beth Harmon is quiet, sullen, and by all appearances unremarkable. That is, until she plays her first game of chess. Her senses grow sharper, her thinking clearer, and for the first time in her life she feels herself fully in control. By the age of 16, she's competing for the US Open championship. But as Beth hones her skills on the professional circuit, the stakes get higher, her isolation grows more frightening, and the thought of escape becomes all the more tempting.

Good story; terrible narration
Revisado: 12-17-20
Narrator is too breathy and inflection and intonation is odd. Male voices are all the same and are terrible- just a low breathy voice that doesn’t fit the characters, sounds more like a voice that would be use with a puppet or cartoon character. This was a good story but hard to listen to because of the narrator’s style. I was looking forward to listening to this after watching the show on Netflix - the audiobook was a big letdown.

Historia
America's Women tells the story of more than four centuries of history. It features a stunning array of personalities, from the women peering worriedly over the side of the Mayflower to feminists having a grand old time protesting beauty pageants and bridal fairs. Courageous, silly, funny, and heartbreaking, these women shaped the nation and our vision of what it means to be female in America.

Ok compilation but over-generalizes
Revisado: 09-24-20
I think she paints the future path of women in a little too rosy a lens; like “look how far we’ve come! Isn’t it great!” She completely omits the challenges we continue to face like the glass ceiling and good old boy network, continued violence against women, restrictions in our health care, and the fact that we still don’t have a woman president.
