Good way to brush up on Macbeth before seeing it live
Revisado: 10-28-18
Everyone knows what a genius Shakespeare was and that’s why his work is still so popular today. However, everyone also knows how hard it is to understand that old English dialogue as it spoken.
I was going to see McBeth on stage and thought it would be a good idea to brush up on the characters and dialogue between them so that when I saw it live I could follow along more easily. The author did a great job with this and also filling in a lot of the gaps so that this read like a novel.
Definitely recommend this

Don’t bother unless you’re only looking to confirm what you already know about Trump
Revisado: 09-18-18
This is a big disappointment. There was little to nothing new revealed in this book that hasn’t been alluded to or specifically reported about already. That said, if you have not kept up with all the news stories since Trump took office or if you’ve been living under a rock somewhere, this might be a good foundation to understand the Trump presidency

Historia
Actor Mahershala Ali performs the gripping tale of an armed band of Confederate deserters and slaves living in a mixed-race community who rose up against the Confederate Cavalry in 1863 to form their own republic, free of slavery, in what is now the state of Mississippi. The community they formed - and the ambiguous racial identity of their descendants - confounded the rules of the segregated South well into the 20th century.

I really wanted to like it, but...
Revisado: 05-17-16
What was most disappointing about Victoria E. Bynum’s story?
Perhaps the story is more coherent and lively for someone reading the book to herself. I found it hard to keep up with all the details of names, dates, and relations by listening to the book. It came across more as a textbook than an impassioned story of untold history.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
I was excited to see that Mahershala Ali was the narrator as I am a big fan of his film and TV work. I was greatly disappointed to listen to his narration though. His voice was monotone and the reading lacked the emotional emphasis required to make the story more interesting.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
I'm not sure if it was the boring narration that made the book seem dry, or a lack of emotional connection the author's telling of facts that made the listening difficult, but either way I was disappointed.
Any additional comments?
Like another reviewer, I found the book difficult to listen to from the very beginning. I forced myself to keep listening, thinking that surely the characters would eventually become more interesting or that the story itself would become more riveting. I have a strong interest in history, and even have ancestors from nearby Jones County who lived during the same time period as those in the book. Nonetheless, I still couldn't make a personal connection to this book.

Historia
Everything we now know about the universe - from the behavior of quarks to the birth of galaxies - has come from people who've been willing to ponder the unanswerable. And with the advent of modern science, great minds have turned to testing and experimentation rather than mere thought as a way of grappling with some of the universe's most vexing dilemmas. So what is our latest picture of some of the most inexplicable features of the universe? What still remains to be uncovered and explored by today's scientists?

Historia
Andrew Smart wants you to sit and do nothing much more often - and he has the science to explain why. At every turn we’re pushed to do more, faster, and more efficiently: That drumbeat resounds throughout our wage-slave society. Multitasking is not only a virtue, it’s a necessity. But Andrew Smart argues that slackers may have the last laugh. The latest neuroscience shows that the “culture of effectiveness” is not only ineffective, it can be harmful to your well-being.

More Brain Science, Less Socialism Please
Revisado: 11-10-14
Any additional comments?
I was excited to read this book because its premise was one that I intuitively feel is true. I got the validation I wanted in the many examples of scientific findings the author provides on how the brain works optimally when allowed some "white space" from thinking and doing. But, the last couple of chapters the focus was on how awful capitalism is, blaming modern society's focus on productivity and profit for the detriment of humankind's creativity. I wish that the author had offset some of his socialistic idealism with practical examples of how we could apply his findings in our everyday life. It was a missed opportunity.
