I picked this up because I felt woefully ignorant of pre-colonial African history. While the title is accurate he seems to really move quickly through the ancient and medieval civilizations that I had come for. I’m especially irked by this as the professor explicitly complains about how many historians have ignored Africa’s precolonial history. But in this series places like Mali are not even devoted a full lecture on their own.

I like his performance and I wouldn’t be dissuaded from listening to him again. And, you do get a good picture of how Africa’s civilizations differ from Europe’s in terms of world view and system. But I was disappointed by the lack of depth given to ancient and medieval Africa.

I loved this book and the performance. The one criticism I would level is that the author is a definite Bush apologist. Sometimes that helps you better understand Bush, but sometimes it's a little pandering. Overall it's one of my favorite books I've read this year.
