Historia
Where did the ideas come from that became the cornerstone of American democracy? Not only the erudite Thomas Jefferson, the wily and elusive Ben Franklin, and the underappreciated Thomas Paine, but also Ethan Allen, the hero of the Green Mountain Boys, and Thomas Young, the forgotten Founder who kicked off the Boston Tea Party. These radicals who founded America set their sights on a revolution of the mind. Derided as "infidels" and "atheists" in their own time, they wanted to liberate us not just from one king but from the tyranny of supernatural religion.

Fascinating but flawed
Revisado: 09-17-24
Stewart’s presentation of Colonial history, its characters and thought is refreshing, often amusing and presents a much needed antidote to — here I wish I could insert that pious painting of Washington and his troops kneeling in prayer.
But when it comes to the European backstory, his critical research vanishes and he retails the tired, old “received version” — except when tracing philosophical genealogy and connections; that is fascinating.
This book is like a virtuoso dish marred by the inclusion of a teaspoonful of sand; to me it became so irritating that I pushed it away before I was half through. Some may think I should not be writing a review at all.

Brilliant, Limpid
Revisado: 08-17-24
As in purest water, Frank Sheed helps you to see many things, some far off, some far down (and to realize that there are unfathomable depths yet below), but a great many are nearby things you had always seen, but never really looked at — all set out in clearest prose with occasional touches of humor.
Nearly everyone has commented on certain oddities of the reader’s pronunciation, but putting that aside, I find his tone very much in keeping with the text. I had to round up from the 4.7 stars I would have liked to give.
I cannot think of anyone to whom I would not recommend this book/recording.

Historia
Harry Blamires, a noted British Christian thinker who started writing through the encouragement of C. S. Lewis, his tutor at Oxford, makes a perceptive diagnosis of some of the weaknesses besetting the church today. He argues that the distinctively Christian intellect is being swept away by secular modes of thought and secular assumptions about reality. Blamires calls for the recovery of the Christian mind and challenges “not only secularism’s assault upon personal morality and the life of the soul, but also secularism’s truncated and perverted view of the meaning of life...."

Trenchant Retro
Revisado: 01-19-23
This book addresses a vital problem, more pressing, more desperate now than 60 years ago: Christianity must lose ground to the world, the flesh and the devil so long as it abrogates intellectual clarity, honesty and courage. And fidelity. The examples and illustrations the author uses must appear vintage to 21st century readers (charmingly so to me, who am the book’s coeval), but this does not affect the cogency of his arguments.
The reading is fresh, and is paced for maximum absorption: a marvelous performance.

MacDonald stressed the necessity of salvation and the importance of combining Christian faith with obedience to Jesus' teachings. He also believed that God's universal grace would eventually save everyone. Though written in the mid-19th century, these sermons, including "Mirrors of Christ", "Glorified through Trouble", "Salvation from Sin", and "The Giver of Rest", continue to provide contemporary followers with the spiritual guidance they seek.

Historia
From the moment Mary Poppins arrives at Number Seventeen Cherry Tree Lane, everyday life at the Banks house is forever changed. Jane, Michael, and the twins have never had such a wonderful nanny, who brings enchantment and excitement everywhere she goes. In Mary Poppins Comes Back, the beloved nanny returns when she's pulled down from the clouds by the string of Michael's kite. In her care, the Banks children meet the King of the Castle and the Dirty Rascal, visit the upside-down world of Mr. Turvy and his bride, Miss Topsy, and spend a breathless afternoon above the park, dangling from a clutch of balloons.

Less fresh and original than Mary Poppins and occasionally lapses into sentimentality. But children are less critical and love it anyway. The lively reading will appeal to young listeners.

Historia
Saint Francis of Assisi is one of the most influential men in the whole of human history. This acclaimed biography of Saint Francis examines the life of a pure artist, a man "whose whole life was a poem". Here is the Saint Francis who prayed and danced with pagan abandon, who talked to animals, and who invented the crèche. Yet Francis also acknowledged the mystic responsibility to communicate his divine experience.

Classic Chesterton
Revisado: 05-14-21
Willful wordplay abounds, and stereoscopic analysis boxed in paradox: this listener found his discussion of the writing of history and the place of sex in the natural order particularly thought-provoking.
The impressionistic sketches of a meeting between Francis and Claire, and of the receiving of the stigmata are deft and moving.
Attempts by various ideologies to shanghai Francis are gleefully scuppered; he emerges from these pages his own man -- and everyone's.
