I’m writing this review on 02/11/2025 from the US. It feels crazy and out of control right now. But reading this book put so many things in perspective. Real hardship. Real risk. Real courage. Real love. And best of all, real people. Thank you to the Martel family for sharing their story and to Mark Sullivan for bringing it to us.

Just a glimpse

This book provides a glimpse into so many topics - children of divorce, friendship, the search for fame, the impact of fame, the horrible ravages of addiction and the life-saving importance of forgiveness.

I was saddened by Matthew’s too-soon passing and yet this book brought me comfort, knowing that he found himself and his purpose before he was gone.

I appreciated this book and the glimpses it gave my into a life so vastly different from my own.

Poignant, painful and positively enthralling

Such an awesome book! The character is so real - as are the unfortunate e princes as a woman in science - or just women in the 50s and 60s. I appreciated the variety and depth of the characters, and the ways in which stories intersect. I really didn’t want the book to end - I’m very attached to the characters and want to know what happens next!

Who needs fiction when real life can be so unbelievable and so beautifully captured. To say I feel for the author is an understatement of gigantic proportion, as would be a statement of respect. This is a “read it to believe” it book that hooked me in from the beginning and had me glued to Audible until the bitter end.

I didn’t want to like this book

But beyond all rationale, I not only found the book believable, I found Mr. Cohen both believable and humble. Really? That bombastic, lying sack of shit? Yes. Most of the credit goes to his wife and children, particularly Samantha for keeping the pressure on and speaking the truth. I do believe he was sucked into a cult and only through forced separation was he able to clear his head. I hope others will pay attention I also hope that Mr. Cohen turns out to be the man he convinced me he is and will spend his timing using his powers for good and to the benefit of those in need, not to the benefit of those who want power.
