Historia
Women can be heroes. When twenty-year-old nursing student Frances “Frankie” McGrath hears these words, it is a revelation. Raised in the sun-drenched, idyllic world of Southern California and sheltered by her conservative parents, she has always prided herself on doing the right thing. But in 1965, the world is changing, and she suddenly dares to imagine a different future for herself. When her brother ships out to serve in Vietnam, she joins the Army Nurse Corps and follows his path.

not for me
Revisado: 04-28-24
I guess I don't read enough fiction, but this book was so jam packed with character stereotypes it made me cringe sometimes.
I feel like the story of Vietnam nurses needs to be told though. I'm just disappointed that the storyline surrounding the experiences in the war are so shallow.

Historia
Bloodlands is a new kind of European history, presenting the mass murders committed by the Nazi and Stalinist regimes as two aspects of a single history, in the time and place where they occurred: between Germany and Russia, when Hitler and Stalin both held power. Assiduously researched, deeply humane, and utterly definitive, Bloodlands will be required listening for anyone seeking to understand the central tragedy of modern history.

informative but disappointing
Revisado: 01-26-23
This book seemed to fill in a lot of unknown European history between the two world wars. Unfortunately, I listened to the included Afterword to the Second Paperback Edition. The author's opinions on current events in the US leads me to question his credibility on any subject whatsoever. So disappointing after such a seemingly informative book.

Not for me
Revisado: 08-19-22
This book started out great; explaining about what happened at Sandy Hook. However, it got so politicized and bitter about the media coverage that I stopped listening. I've never had to stop listening to an Audible book, but this just kept repeating all the wrongs that had been done, etc. I don't know who is right or who is wrong but maybe a chapter about it would be enough.

Very odd emotionless narration. Almost one-note. The book is about a 12 year old survivor and the terrible things she witnessed delivered in a monotone

Discover the stories of 12 women who heard the call to settle the West and who came from all points of the globe to begin their journeys. As a slave Clara watched helplessly as her husband and children were sold, only to be reunited with her youngest daughter as a free woman six decades later. Too many opinions
Revisado: 07-09-21
I loved the stories of incredible women of the West. However after every story, the author added preachy conclusions about how we could apply what we learned to our own lives. I think it would have been a much better book to let the reader come to their own conclusions!
