Finally!!

I read all of Capstick's books from the library 30 years ago. I have been able to buy them over the years since.
Today this book showed up on my Audible recomendations. I've been waiting for this for the 12 years I've been listening to Audible books.
I bought both books immediately.
PLEASE read the rest of his books!
These are the best hunting books I've ever read.
The reading of them it great!

Kinda cringy.

The narrator is too dramatic. Every scene sound like it's the end of the world. . Every person that had dialog sounds like jerk. And he reads too slowly. Rediculously slow. It's hard to make a scene sound exciting when a sentence takes so long to hear.

I've read or listened to every CJ Box title. Having been in law enforcement, there are always a few things in every book that made me cringe. I had hoped, by now, he would have someone that knows about law enforcement helping to clean those cringy moments up.

I question the use of the names of current Wyoming politicians for characters. Ogden Driskill is the current President of the Wyoming Senate. That just left me with a sour taste in my mouth. I understand politics in the novel but, I don't like the smell of it outside the novel. Anyone else from Wyoming that picked up on some of the names will understand what I'm saying.

CJ has great story lines but his writing seems to be going down hill. I notice this with a lot of writers. They write amazing books for while. They do thier best work. After a while it seems like they are writing to fulfill a contract by a deadline. I think touring to support a books and with CJ, turning his books into a TV series, takes away time from research and writing. After the first 10 books, the quality goes down.

I can feel CJ looking for a way to retire Joe. It will be interesting to see how this plays out. I wonder if Sheridan will put the red shirt on...?

The narration is done with a computer.

Not a bad book but you can tell it's a computerized voice. I distracts from the story.

This isn't a CJ Box novel.

I have been a HUGE fan of his since the first novel. This one is all over the place. The narrator didn't help. It was an amateur plot intermingled with a great idea. By now, Joe shouldn't have this crap.. or this way of writing anyway. It feels like CJ had to get novel out for his contract. It was rushed. The narrator has been OK in previous novels but made it sound stupid this time. CJ needs to go in different directions. This was just bad.

Before listening, Google the author. The narrator doesn't fit the author, but he did a great job. Guy was crazy to take on this adventure. What an experience. I would love to have done that! Well written! I would like to find the articles that he wrote while doing this.

Disappointing

At least half of the book covers what has led up to this point. I wish he didn't try to write each book in this series as a stand alone book. That is what is frustrating about this author. He has done the same thing in his other series as well. The narrator did a good job but Dick Hill should have been used. I have got to know these characters by the voice Dick put to them. Sick is back for the next 2 books and then Scott Brick will be reading. I don't think I'll continue with the series.

Too Over the Top

Every story in the book is told as if it was a life or death experience. The dramatization was too annoying to keep listening to. There were some good stories, but calm down a little.
Kids would probably enjoy it, as it is full of "edge of your seat excitement" but for anyone who has done any hunting at all, it just annoying.

This isn't a book. It's an experience.

I don't know if the book would have been as good if I had read it myself. Will Patton crushed it! It came alive! The poetic prose is captured in a way that I have never read or heard before. What an amazing reading of an amazing story. Anyone interested in literature needs to experience this work of art.

Great stuff until he starts in with politics. When you subsidize the drug dealers and narcos for as long as he did you lose the right to complain about police and politics in America. He's a felon whose money kept him out of jail. He never should have been given citizenship.
