Historia
Before Shelby Foote undertook his epic history of the Civil War, he wrote this fictional chronicle, "a landscape in narrative", of Jordan County, Mississippi, a place where the traumas of slavery, war, and Reconstruction are as tangible as rock formations.

Excellent
Revisado: 12-11-22
This is the first book I have read by Shelby Foote. I have been immersed in great books by black authors writing on slavery and beyond, so I wanted to balance that with another viewpoint, to round out my understanding. I was riveted by each story, and one in particular had me in tears. The writing was absolutely amazing. Through sadness and a sense of futility, the collection also flowed with great hope and beauty. A deep reflection on the human condition. I will now eagerly read everything I can get my hands on by this author. As for the narrator, it is indeed the excellent Grover Gardner under another name. Why, I don't know, but he is unmistakable. This audiobook deserves high praise.

Historia
Margaret "Peggy" Thomas and her husband, James, lead a simple and peaceful life; she tends to the farm while he works as sheriff in the nearby town of Bleak Knob. Their evenings are spent doing the thing they love most - being together. One afternoon, after picking up fabric at the general store, Margaret watches helplessly as James is gunned down on the sidewalk in front of her. Days of mourning turn into weeks and then years, filled with little more than grief and alcohol.

Loved it!
Revisado: 10-28-22
First, the narrator, Carol Monda, was absolutely superb, a pleasure to listen to. Her whiskey voice is deep, rich, fresh and very unique. She brought this story to vibrant life.
The story is emotional, raw, exciting, sad and funny. It's themes of loneliness, loss, friendship, revenge and redemption are fully explored. The characters feel so real, like old friends. I don't know why I chose this audiobook, because this is not my usual genre, but I'm so glad I did. It was just so good!
