Historia
Stella Hobhouse is a brilliant rider, stalwart friend, skilled sketch artist—and completely overlooked. Her outmodish gray hair makes her invisible to London society. Combined with her brother’s pious restrictions and her dwindling inheritance, Stella is on the verge of a lifetime marooned in Derbyshire as a spinster. Unless she does something drastic…like posing for a daring new style of portrait by the only man who’s ever really seen her.

Stars and light
Revisado: 11-24-24
This book features the fourth of the four horsewomen, Stella, the one with the gray hair. She meets Teddy, the younger brother of Alex from the Parish Orphans series. I loved how the two series interconnected. Teddy is an artist and he admires Stella for who she is. It’s a lovely story, beautifully narrated. Highly recommended!

Refreshingly different Victorian romance
Revisado: 01-29-23
Mimi Matthews always writes wonderful, clean Victorian romances. This one is no exception. The narrator is excellent, but his inflection at the end of every sentence bothers me. I got used to it though. The story is wonderful!

Historia
A devastating disaster has left the Forbidden Court in ashes, its fountains destroyed, and its magic at risk. It was destined as the site of Trynne Kiskaddon’s coronation as empress. Now, all Trynne can imagine is the roar of flames, the cries of Gahalatine’s people, and the smell of cinders in a city gone dark. Tragic as the threat to Kingfountain is, it’s nowhere near as foul as the treachery posed by Morwenna.

This book drove me crazy
Revisado: 11-25-17
I don't like to give negative reviews, but I'm so frustrated that I wasted a credit on this book that I can't help it. The narrator is annoying. I didn't listen to a sample before I bought the book since I love all things orphan train....big mistake. I made it 11 chapters into the book and there is a woman that goes west on a train through the children's aide society, but she's 19 and going for a job. The story is really a romance and an irritating one at that. I hate it when authors are always telling me how the character feels instead of showing me. And I hate the romance formula where someone is hiding how they really feel to simply move the story along. I didn't finish the book and don't care how it ends. I'm sorry for being so negative. I can say that it seems like the author did a good job of researching and found an interesting story I didn't know about (that the children's aide society helped place female workers out west) and the story line would have been good if the length of the book was cut in half and the characters were more fully developed than described.

Historia
In name and by birth, Celia was a Dunne. She had inherited the beautiful old family home by the Rydd Water – but was she bound to live her life by the principles of her predecessors? Was there some hidden restraint that compelled her to heed the past? Celia’s house is a moving and poignant story of the struggle between old and young: the older generation anxious to preserve the values they have helped create while their children are determined at all costs to make lives of their own.

Not my favorite, but still good
Revisado: 07-12-16
This isn't my favorite DE Stevenson book, though I still like it. It's too long and I had trouble keeping the characters straight (and I think the narrator did as well). It's an important story to read in regards to many of the characters who live in Ryddleton though. Overall, good enough but long.

Historia
Russ Harris offers a surprising solution to low self-confidence, shyness, and insecurity: Rather than trying to "get over" our fears, he says, the secret is to form a new and wiser relationship with them. Paradoxically, it's only when we stop struggling against our fearfulness that we begin to find lasting freedom from it.

Good material, but wish it was appropriate for all ages
Revisado: 07-06-16
I learned a lot of useful lessons from this book and think it would have been a great book to have my 12 and 14 year old daughters listen to, however sex is mentioned and discussed so many times that it just doesn't feel appropriate. I get that men (and women) may lack confidence in that arena, but I'd have preferred that to be treated as a separate book or at least a separate chapter, rather than sprinkled throughout the book. The content of the book is good, though the author repeats himself a lot. Maybe the repetition was necessary to really drive his points home, or maybe it was to get to a certain word count. I can't tell. Either way, I learned a lot from this book about how to act with confidence before I feel confident, and how this is different from "fake it till you make it" since you embrace fear and anxiety rather than pretending you don't feel them. I plan to listen to his book on weight loss as well because I can see how the principles learned in this book would be helpful in the weight loss arena also.
